Upgrading Exhaust System - Turboback

Ok folks,

I will be upgrading my exhaust system in the spring and naturally I did some searching already. My plans are to have either Macht Schnell or AR Design 3" downpipes and BMW Performance Exhaust.

I cannot find a definitive answer to the following questions:

1. Is the BMW Performance Exhaust 3" in diameter?
2. The downpipes connect one end at the turbo side. Do they connect directly to the exhaust at the other side?

Basically, I am trying to make sure that I upgrade things properly and not end up with a choke point (in terms of diameter) between the downpipes and the BMW Performance Exhaust.

If I am missing any parts, I'd be grateful if you can post links to the other exhaust components I should be considering for upgrades.

Thanks for your help in advance!

The Performance exhaust its basically just the mufflers. You will have to cut your stock exhaust and either weld them or put some clamps in place.
Best option is to get a complete Turbo back 2.5 inch with resonators or HFC cats and some catless downpipes .

Ok, so now I am even more confused:

Will the downpipes connect directly to the BMW Performance exhaust? ...or do I need to keep any of my stock exhaust components (midpipes) to connect the downpipes to the BMW Performance exhaust.

My understanding that the BMW Performance exhaust is a complete system with mufflers, midpipes and all the clamps needed to connect it directly to the downpipes. Is that correct?

The BMW exhaust is just the rear section (mufflers)

Ok,

So here is the image of the BMW Performance Exhaust from RealOEM.com:

So clearly it includes more than just the big mufflers at the back.

Actually the PE for e90 replaces that resonator in the pic with the xpipe from the e92. The e92 PE is mufflers only.

Most exhausts are 2.5inch except the AMS which is a single 3.0inch pipe. And it doesnt matter what size downpipe you're getting because even the 3.0inch downpipes then have a 2.5inch flange at each end which connects to the exhaust normally, even if it was the stock exhaust. So you dont have to worry about the exhaust and downpipe combination you should get.

Regarding the BMW performance exhaust, for the E92 (COUPE) its just the mufflers, so you will need to cut out your stock mufflers and then weld the BMW performance ones to the midpipes. If I was you I would get a full downpipe-back exhaust for the same amount that you'll be spending on just the BMW performance exhaust (which honestly I dont even like the sound of) and get the Autobahn Exotics exhaust or even the HKS exhaust (the HKS exhaust has a resonator which is even better since you'll be running fully catless).

Ok,

So my E90 PE will include a replacement x-pipe along with the mufflers, correct?

In this case, does the x-pipe connect directly to the downpipes?

for E90 PE setup, it will come with a mid pipe with x-pipe already installed. that case you will need to cut the stock mid pipe after cats, clamp the new mid pipe with x-pipe in, and connect it to the PE mufflers. all clamps/hardware are included in the package.

The BMW Performance exhaust will require cutting.

If you're doing DP's anyway, might as well get something else. Only way I'd recommend BMW Perf for that is if you're concerned about your warranty. The fact that you want DP's too says that's not the case.

How will installing the BMW performance exhaust work when lease is returned and the oem exhaust is installed back on. Will they charge something for cutting the oem pipes.

As long as your stock exhaust is back on there I dont think they will charge you a fee.

I think I may be better off getting the Autobahn Exotics full exhaust system + downpipes. Nothing to cut, and if I ever want to go back to stock, I will have all the stock pieces "unmolested".

I also like the idea of the fully separated pipes better...

Well, BMW made the x-pipe for a reason. I'm not saying fully divorced piping is bad at all but I'm trying to avoid all the droning I can by sticking with the stock section 1+2.

thats why i said the HKS over the AE since it includes resonators to avoid the droning

Who sells HKS exhausts online? Do they make one for the E90?

I would recommend a CP-E Cat-Back. It's a great, subtle sound.

Our catless downpipes with an AE or AMS exhaust are my personal favorite, of course We've installed a number of AEs with great success, and the AMS is also a great option that weighs 30lbs less than the AE, offering identical performance.

As most have said the PE exhaust for the E90 attaches right behind the cat's, you cut off the stock exhaust there and clamp or weld the PE one. The midsection replaces the resonator with an X pipe like the coupe hence the different sound between coupe and sedan stock. Since you've already indicated you are going with catless downpipes there's really no real benefit to staying with PE unless you want a quieter exhaust (but then why catless DP's) so I would say go either AE/HKS/AMS depending on the deal you can get as all are really similar. There's an exhaust sticky where you can hear them but really nothing beats hearing them in person. I assume you have no warranty or don't care nor are you concerned about vehicle inspections and smog certification? If either of those concern you or are needed, I don't know ILL law on those, then you might need to rethink your whole purchase.

Nono,

I will be going with CATTED downpipes. There are emissions checks here in IL and I do need the catalytic converters.
