What's your mileage?
Just wondering how long people believe they can run their cars before they reach their effective shelf life if you like. Is 100,000 miles the limit and then sell it? Or will diesels tun to 150,000 miles without problem?
Interested to know people's thoughts. Monk |

I've traditionally kept mine to 90k miles, ( 3 x 330d) , Buying at £30k, selling at £13k, which is a solid price selling privately and when what I owe balances out with what they are worth. I perceive, rightly or wrongly, that after 100k the punters are far less keen, even though virtually all motorway miles. Had very few problems with any of them.

100,000 seems to be the figure that puts people off.
I'd highly doubt that a well cared for BMW will fall apart after 100,000 miles. In my younger years I managed 130,000 out of a Rover 214 before the timing belt snapped. It was not worth the cost of repair but the rest of the car was fine. My 03 Astra GSi turbo which I bought new. A couple of minor issues, air flow metre x3 although my aftermarket airfilter was blamed, and rear springs. Car ran great until turbo was on it's last legs and I left it too long. The impeller exploded and the fragments ended up inside the engine. The car was running a fair amount of extra power and if I had replaced the turbo 105,000 was nothing. Sold the car after getting a good offer but the engine had to be replaced. The pistons and bores were damaged by the fragments of the impeller. Looked after cars should last. |

I bought my 55 plate E90 320d last april at 97k. It has now done 126k and I have had no problems (touch wood) so far and have had to do nothing other then regular services, brake pads and tyres.
Still drives like a dream

The guy we use to take us to Gatwick/Heathrow runs a Vectra diesel 2005; he is always on the motorways or A roads........its done 220,000 now with purely regular maintenance.
OK purely anecdotal but I get the feeling that modern cars properly maintained, especially with low-stress M-way miles can run well beyond 100k without expensive problems. I imagine that the more complex the car the less probable that is however? Mike. |

High mileage is fine for any car that is well serviced. I've still got my 205 and its got 207k on it! Lots of that was on the track too!
All depends on how long you intend to keep it. If I like a car then we just hold onto it. Still got our golf which we got at 1 year old, 10k miles, and its running well now at near 140k. Its been well maintained and has served us well for 8 years! Our 335i is on 90k already but its runs well and pulled 403bhp at the wheels recently. Cars are pot luck, sometimes you get a peach others a lemon! |

My old man did 260k + miles in a 530i. Owned it from 5 months old. Was a good car!

my 330d had 105k on it when i sold it, i always wanted to keep it, i reckon it would have easy done 200k without any problems. there was no smoke, no rattles, it drove like a 40kmile car! a well maintained 330d will munch through 250,000 miles i reckon.

Owned my 320d for about a year now. Bout on 78k, just clicked 92k with no probs. The car is an 07 btw. There has been some real propeganda wheeled out about car mileages probably originated from dealerships. 100k is nothing on a well maintained car. I've just sold my Mk1 golf gti which was on 278k on its original engine and ran spot on. people just have a mental barrier when it turns 100k, daft really as it can be the most cost effective motoring. A few years back I bought a W plate E46 328 tourer on 128k, ran it for 1 year and sold it on 139k for a grand more than I paid for it and all I had done during my ownership was refurb the alloys and given the bodywork a mop and polish.

My 335i (10/2008) has 70k miles now bought on 57k in January. Purely motorway miles and feels like a 30k miles car.

High, motorway mileage and regular use certainly seems to lead to good reliability in my experience. I think much over 90k puts people off to an extent, but you are generally going to be better off financially keeping the car you have than changing for a younger one! It was noticeable when I was looking for my car that there were a lot of BMW's out there well into 6 figures that people were asking strong money for. Same with Porsches - the effect of high miles is very marque dependent. I've had a few Alfas and with them I would get rid well before 100k as they are effectively worthless beyond that.
Personally I buy cars about 3 years old and keep for 3 years, unless I can get a cracking deal on a new one (which rules out things like BMW's). I do a fair few miles so the selling mileage can be high but the purchase price tends to be sufficiently low for it not to be an issue - it is the total £ lost that matters, not the %. One example - I bought a V6 passat estate at 60k/3 years and only got £3k for it 3 years later with 150k up. But, since it only cost me £8k at 3 years (list £23k) that was fine by me! Well looked after cars 2-3 years old often look, feel and drive like new and the first owner has taken a huge bath. My current 330 must have listed for over £38k with the spec, less than 3 years and 20k later I bought it for 16k. The first owner lost more than I can possibly lose. |
