Rattles not covered after 12 months of warranty??

Hi all,

I own a 2010 e92 335i MSports.

A recent annoying rear shelf creaking/rattle developed over the past month or so especially after parking in the sun for a few hours. Brought the car to Sydney BMW pretty quickly (as my 3 year factory warranty is expiring in a week's time) and got quoted $200+ for a diagnostic inspection. I was surprised as I thought rattles should be covered within the factory warranty. Apparently I was told rattles are only covered for the first 12 months, which I thought was rather unreasonable. I have had my toyotas and lexus rattles fixed even beyond the factory warranty period as a courtesy repair previously. I would have thought the rear shelf was part of the trim.

Has anyone had their rattles looked at and fixed under warranty after the first 12 months?

Also a separate question is whether getting the extended warranty (looking at the Allianz/BMW New car warranty) is worth it? I got a quote from a broker for $3k (24 months) vs $5k (AFTER a 25% off!!!) from Sydney BMW. I believe the Allianz and BMW-Branded warranties are the same, as the PDS were virtually word for word the same.

Thanks in advance for any much needed advice!

The latest quote from Sydney BMW yesterday (BMW "new car extended warranty"):

1 year unlimited kilometres $5503.67 less 25% = $4127.75
2 year unlimited kilometres $6491.53 less 25% = $4868.64
3 year unlimited kilometres $7700.00 less 25% = $5755.00

Seems like one hell of a rip off to me. I will be calling everywhere to get a better deal. Anyone has gotten a better deal? Which dealership?

I had the E90 taken back for rear parcel shelf creaking noise twice. They replaced some parts each time. The first time was within 12 months, the second time was about 18months. The car still makes a creaking noise from the same place, but not as bad as before. Its very disappointing really. I wondered if the E92 body might have less creaks than the sedan, but unfortunately not in your case.

I think you should make a point that this is not a normal rattle. Part of the interior fittings has come loose due to design or manufacturing issue.

Forget the Allianz/BNW warranty, It's compete rubbish!

A little background on my experience with it is that I purchased my E92 brand new from Doncaster BMW and once the new car warranty was due to expire I took out the BMW branded (Allianz backed) new car warranty extension for an additional 2 years/unlimited km's which was also purchased from Doncaster BMW and came printed on a BMW letterhead. At around the 4.5 year mark (so 1.5 years into the extended warranty). I had a whole bunch of odd/random electrical issues such windows not working, sunroof not closing, angel eyes sometimes lighting up with no issues but at other times they would not light at all and also the random operation of the seat belt handovers.

I booked the car in and upon arrival at service I mentioned that the car had the BMW/Allianz extended warranty that was also purchased from Doncaster BMW. To my surprise, the service advisor looked through the papers and said "we don't recognise these warranties anymore because Allianz has been difficult in paying claims out". I told him that is absolutely ridiculous as the warranty was purchased through Doncaster BMW and printed on a BMW Australia letterhead so they have no right to immediately disregard the warranty completely (It's different if a claim was to be put through to Allianz and then denied).

After 20 mins of arguing with the service advisor, I called BMW Australia who checked the policy number of the warranty and said that the car is definitely covered under warranty and if Doncaster BMW tells me otherwise then it is incorrect. I approached the service advisor again who was adamant that he was informed at a BMW training event that BMW Australia doesn't sell these warranties through their dealers anymore because of past problems with Allianz and again restated that my car is not recognised as being covered by any warranty whatsoever.

I approached the service manager who was even more useless and informed me that because my car had been serviced at a very well known BMW independent specialist and not by Doncaster BMW then they wouldn't even acknowledge the warranty under "good will" because they don't know what oil had been used during servicing by the independent specialist. I could not believe the sheer level of stupidity that the service manager displayed. I left service and approached reception specifically asking to speak to the gentleman who sold me the warranty in the first place. After waiting 1.5 hours for him to finish his meeting, he came out and explained that he is still selling these warranties and they should definitely be recognised

I asked him to follow me to the service advisor who told me that they will not recognise or sell these warranties anymore. The conversation was quite interesting as these two idiots argued between themselves about whether they should be selling these warranties or not and whether they should be recognising past warranties sold through their dealership. Obviously the person from Finance was saying that they are still selling these warranties and that service should be recognising them whilst the service advisor insistedthat they are to not recognise those warranties or sell them anymore. At this point I called BMW Australia again and after 30 minutes on the line explaining the situation, they simply advised me to try another dealer

I decided to leave and go back the next day to have a 5 minute chat with the dealer principle to ascertain why such conflicting information was coming from two departments within the same dealership that he owned. I was initially informed that the dealer principle does not meet with customers however after some persuasion they agreed to getting the dealer principle. I was met by a very hurried and rude man who basically gave me 2 mins to explain the issue. The response received was quite surprising and disappointing because he basically couldn't careless about what had happened and told me that If I purchased a new car from them (I was looking at trading my E92 for an F30 at the time) then he would fix the issues with my car under the warranty (what f****ing good would that be when I would be trading the car in to them???) otherwise that it costs him 2 million dollars to just open the dealerships doors every month and that that money needs to come from somewhere

Essentially the dealer principle alluded to the fact that they need to rip off their customers in order to cover the costs of their business. I've never experienced such poor customer service from any company in my life but I let it go and left the dealership. About a two weeks after I received a call from Doncaster BMW informing me that my lease was due to expire and enquired on whether I would like to purchase a new BMW. I informed the salesman of my recent experience with their dealership and his reply was that he didn't know anything about it and rushed to end the call. About another month passed and I received another call from BMW Australia this time stating that my lease was close to expiring and again asking if I would be interested in upgrading. I again informed them on my experience with Doncaster BMW and that this had really put me off the brand. The response was again quite generic and whilst he promised to look into the issue and would contact Doncaster BMW to see why this had occurred, unfortunately there was no follow up and no contact from that point on.

Sorry for the long winded rant but I just thought I'd let you know of my experience with Doncaster BMW, the BMW branded Allianz warranty and BMW Australia. I stress that this has been my experience only and whilst it may have only been an issue with Doncaster BMW, the sheer level of arrogance and stupidity from these idiots has put me right off purchasing another new BMW and soured the whole experience for me. IMO, the BMW branded Allianz underwritten new car warranty extension is no better or worse than those other so called warranty extensions that you find available from every used car dealership which aren't worth the paper their written on
