Sharkedit controls...

Will sharkedit allow control over other parameters, ie water pump speed and top-speed limiter?

I wondered that, too. Since I'm not bound by a license agreement, and I paid separate fees to install it, it's should be "mine" in the same way any other good, like a muffler is. There are some interesting things relating to UCC and copyright law here. In fact, I believe first-sale doctrine makes it illegal for Dinan to prevent you from selling your flash.

Not saying I'd resell it, and imagine the warranty consequences of doing so! BMW knows you flashed the mofo, but you "sold" your tune to someone else... have fun with that Dinan warranty claim!

Not that I'm interested in warez'ing the map or anything. I'll likely keep mine, and buy the shark to play. I also believe people are going to be able to "back into" Dinan's tune just by mimicking AFR/timing graphs.

With that said, while Sharkedit COULD certainly be used for this purpose, we don't know what it's capabilities are going to be. We don't know what it's going to let you tune.

Nice, nice, nice work Jim. I've been wanting something like this for a long time. This is what tuning FI cars is all about, and you just made it accessible to everyone. Hat's off.

They can easily escape any anti-trust / warranty issues....

Just be happy you are one of the few innovators left....you are leading a new generation of tuners....
I think Jim's point is that while (warranty aside) you may be able to set it on fire, you can't alter the way the engine operates by reprogramming the ECU. That ain't right.

If you want to run 40psi on your $40k toy, you should be able to!

Jeff, can I make a suggestion - since you seemingly know little to nothing about
this DME - or it's internals - please don't make false speculations to lead these
guys astray.

DME's have been "counting" flashes (not really - more on this in a second)
since MS41.1 released on the 96 328 and MS41.2 on the 96 M3.

Which we were flashing in 1997.

So seeing as I've been flashing BMW DME control units for 11 of the 15
years I've been tuning BMW's - I think I can say unequivocally that We've
never had a problem with this function.

Why? because it isn't a flash COUNTER, Jeff.

In German it's called the AIF or Aenderungs (Ae is really A umlaut) Info Feld
or Change Info Field - also sometimes called UIF or User Info Field.

It can be updated 14 times.

This was an arbitrary number that BMW picked at some point.

Again, it doesn't affect what we do - at all.

Quote:
And the idea that Magnusson Moss protects this is rediculous.
It's "ridiculous". and actually it's not.

Quote:
The minute you touch the code in this car you are in violation of proprietory licenses.
Again "proprietary" and..

Which "licenses" - and how are these imaginary licenses different from
the DMEs in the cars the entire industry has tuned since 1993??

Please tell us.

There is nothing preventing a car owner from tuning their car except the
technical boundaries. Which we've just removed.

G'nite,

Jim

Can you save the file? Yes.

Edit it? No.

Consider that professional courtesy amongst tuners.

If you need a base tune to work from - I can supply that for you.

(Reason: it's not nice to copy someone elses term paper )

As far as what you can edit - the list is very long. Short BF08 sleep time summary.

Max VE, Turbo Maps, Fuel, Timing, Vanos, Speed limiters, Rev limiters,
intercooler flow tables, etc etc yadda.

BTW, notice I didn't mention "boost maps" because boost isn't controlled
by a "boost map" in MSD80.

Seeing as how we can program the ECU with your new unit, will this shark editor allow you to add a boost readout in either the center display between the tach and speedo or on the idrive?

that pic is seriously uncalled for ^^

I want to know how similar to ECUflash this will be? (my only experience with these things are ECUflash based on all my Evo buddies)

what restrictions (if any) are you going to be putting on this?

I don't hate that group, I just like seeing people get what they deserve. I actually feel sorry for the others who will be impacted by this. By all accounts, they are great people to deal with whether it's in public or private. Vishnu's group on the other hand only seems to be good to deal with when "the camera's rolling", in private not so much. Their history of questionable customer service tactics is one of the reasons other have done as well as they have. In the beginning, they were only "devil to dance with" and they treated too many people as such. Good riddance as far as I'm concerned...

So this will enable Dinan users the ability to backup their Dinan tune. Very nice.

Why shouldn't we worry about a flash counter?
yup i used a COBB on my car aswell. flashed her a couple times and my dealer use to brek my balls on it aswell, even after i unmarried the COBB from my car.

so the Shark edit will not leave UPDATES or FLASH counters behind for bmw to see? of any sort or anything that the DME was accessed?

im really scared of this esp when using this same feature on my sti when i first got it, just ended up going with the COBB after that for safety reasons and using that for th rest of its life, im guessing that is where the SHark injector comes in.?

Some inventive or wealthy car owner - or one w/ a good litigator Brother-in-law.

How do they get off locking us OWNERS out of the cars we OWN?

But then say - "well, but you can buy it FROM US". (us = BMW Performance)

That entire thing smacks of a major violation of the Moss-Magnuson Warr. Act.

Not to mention anti-trust, competitive restriction, etc laws.

Jim
If BMW takes on this hard line against any aftermarket modifications, they better practice what they preach and not release a "factory tune" themselves or else it seems like they are doing exactly what Bill Gates tried to do with Microsoft, with their anti-competitive monopolising of the software industry.

Let BMW rollout their "BMW Performance" tune and then I say bring it on......lets sue the f&ckers.

Regardless, this is the most exciting developement yet in N54 tuning.
You bought the car, agreed to terms of the warranty but you don't think twice robbing them $10K-$20K that it would take to fix a blown up motor. Would you mug your SA and take $20K off his pockets? Isn't this mess going to come back and haunt all of future BMW sales? Isn't BMW going to prevent any more turbos from coming to the US if this gets out of hand? Guys, it's not as simple as most here think. The economics of massive warranty liability are too great to fathom.
