I have just bought a new tv and have a slight problem.

All of the cables, HDMI, Ethernet, wii and power are channelled in to my chimney stack. The new tv is a different make (Samsung) and the power cable is a different fitting to the one channelled into my wall. I don’t want to go about ripping the cable from the wall and having to re-skim it, so how difficult would it be cut the end of the power cord from the new tv and attach it to the existing cord. I think I know the answer to this but would like to hear from someone who has either done it or knows what they are talking about

Easy mate.

You can cut and joint the new TV plug onto the end of the existing embedded mains lead no problems.

Firstly though, can you confirm the number of holes in the new and old TV mains connectors, 2 or 3? This is important.


Then it depends whether you want to do it in a small wall box or an in-line joint.

There's various ways to do it, but a good strong in line joint like this http://www.screwfix.com/p/teetube-ip...le-joint/81353 would be ideal and is and easy to use, strong, safe solution that would satisfy safety regs.

It's waterproof (doesn't need to be of course) but that means it securely clamps the cables so they can't get pulled apart (kids around?)

I'd imagine you new TV takes a figure eight type plug. If so can't you cut the three pin plug from the other end and fit an inline connector? Just make sure the old mains plug has the correctly rated fuse in it.

No need for a sparky, but if you're not confident yourself then get someone who is.

A stanley knife, inline crimps and some PVC tape would do it just fine and cost pence, but you need to have a bit of knowledge to do it safely.

But you need to confirm how may pins are on the new TV though as that connector is a 2 pin. I'd be suprised if such a large appliance like a TV set is 2 pin, especially as they have metal auxiliary sockets and other devices can be plugged in,

Usually only totally enclosed, double insulated devices can be 2 wire (no earth).

If it's figure of eight plug it's not earthed.And if a kettle type plug it will be. In which case the figure of eight/twin pin suggestion will be no good.

The main issue (if it is one) is that your power to your old TV may not have an earth in the cable. Open the plug at the socket end and see if it has, at least then if the new set doesn't use it you can still use the cable.

Ok, back home now. The old tv has a 3 pin application and the new one has a much thinner cord and just 2 pins.

It's easy then. Red to red, black to black and blew to bits

Just tape the earth back and connect the others straight through. Don't cut your existing able back too short and don't cut the earth back a mile, you may need it at a later date if you change TV again.

You could probably buy the socket end as a plug from maplin to match the current cable nad then another plug to match the current socket in the new TV. Get a paice of cable and join up. Take a picture of the cable you have in the wall and the new tv power point and I'll find them for you
