The E90 thermostat is simply an electronic valve and it does not sense temp and open like a traditional auto thermostat. There is not set temp that it opens at. It starts to open when the computer tells it to open. This varies depending on what temperature the the computer wants the engine to be at. An example being that the engine runs at a different temperature on the high way than compared to sitting in traffic.
