The signal can be crappy on these things. Sometimes you can be right next to the car before it receives the signal.
I think the fob also recharges when it's inserted into the car but I'm not 100% on that. If it's had little use I suppose it could be low on power.

Yes the fob recharges itself when inserted in the dash. Do you drive a lot of short distances? It may be worth taking it for a run for an hour or two. If you have a second fob it's recommended to use that occasionally to recharge that too

My key fob works for remote lock and unlock but when I put in key slot I hear a click that it's grasped the key but the ignition won't come on.
Takes up to 50 times sometimes of reinserting before ignition lights come on. I've changed car battery.
Any ideas? Faulty key slot?

A couple of things that spring to mind:

Have you tried your spare key to see if the problem persists, this would potentially eliminate either the other key or the slot as the problem.

Have you coded the new battery?

Spare key does the same.
Both keys have the recharable batteries version so keyfob is sealed no option to replace batteries.
When ignition finally comes on. Next time I try it comes on instantly if left for a few hours have problem again.

Ok, it might just be the keyslot/reader that is faulty.

Replacements are easily found on eBay for under £20 and here is a guide on how to change it out - http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tech...eplacement.htm

It's for LHD drive cars but will be the same.....

Sorry to hijack thread but looking for advice regarding my 330D E92 2012 model.

I have recently purchased the car and it only came with one key. How much do BMW charge for a replacement key? I have read that a new key can Be programmed at home rather than taking it to the dealers? Is this possible?

Thanks

Just replaced mine at my local main dealer and it came out at £135, that’s just the main part and doesn’t include the key. You can just swap that over. It only took 24 hours and came from Germany. Very pleased with the service. Now I know £135 sounds a lot but Fords and Mercedes want £200 for replacement fobs. The only problem I have is both my old ones are naff so I guess I’ll be getting a 2nd one at some point. Hope this helps

The main dealer keys come direct from Germany, they use your vid and registration number and get the code details from their archives. My local main dealer was going to charge £165. Sod that!!!!

Now, i know you shouldn't promote other forums, but if you're a member of the e90 owners FB group, there's a guy on there who does it for £100 including supply, code, and cut new key blade.
