I've also seen a lot of failed urethane motor mounts, even from cars with half the torque and just a few sessions on track. For the Grand Am 328i racecar, we drilled holes in the factory rubber mounts to drain the fluid, cut off the bottom plastic cap, and filled the top and bottom voids with urethane. The urethane can come loose and fall out due to its shape, so I took the perfect form of the urethane plug that popped out after it was cured, covered it with primer and rubber adhesive, and pressed it back into the void in the mount. I then welded an aluminum plate on the bottom to hold the urethane in place.

I just want to reduce some of the slop when shifting under full load. And I am not sure about the aftermarket mounts. Last edited by drm916; 12-07-2012 at 03:54 PM.. |

One reason an upgraded motor mount could be key is to prevent the power steering pulley from contacting the subframe which can happen on early build cars. (there's a TIS regarding this I believe) I'm interested to see the difference between the 335is left side mount and regular mount....

You are running which Series M3? I was looking at the diagrams for the F80 M3/M4 and it would appear the transmission mount from those could transfer over to us...

335is left mount is common to both trans. Same for E46 trans mounts. I would recomend the billet PTF mounts if your not really worried about NVH.

FCobra94 , it's been a year. Why did you upgrade? Do you like the upgrade? Any bad NVH?
How is it holding up?

Upgraded both because "I was in there anyway." No more NVH over factory mounts to speak of. Not sure about the 335is motor mount, but the M3 trans mounts are stiffer for sure!
May consider the Black Forest stage 1 motor mounts if I do any further upgrades like turbos, etc. in the future. My current motor mounts still let the engine rock pretty noticably when abruptly letting off the throttle after going WOT. |

Slightly OT but the other day I replaced LF axle on my XI. 44k miles. You have to carefully pop the axle out of the diff with a pry bar levered against the subframe. While doing that I was amazed how much the entire engine assembly moved, engine mounts are for shit on this car. Will do the IS mount next time I'm in there on the R side. There is only one tranny/transfer case mount, I doubt anybody makes a better one unfortunately.

They are side specific on the IS. One side is upgraded, the other side is the same on all n54 (e90s)

I'm planning on swapping all my bushings to solid in about a month. I currently run solid turner diff bushings and m3 subframe bushings and can honestly say I barely notice any NVH over stock. I totally regret getting the m3 subframe bushings since I still feel the rear is a little bit wobbly. I'm also planning on running Ohlins coilovers since I've heard they are quite soft and offer great dampening on the street. I'll try to give some feedback once I get them in.
