ACS coming with a BMW-approved N54 chip

Talked with a friend in Aachen yesterday I consider a very reliable source... says ACS is coming to market with a chip kit that turns 360 bhp, and maintains the full BMW factory warranty.

Then he told me what they're gonna ask

What are they gonna ask? $2500? If BMW is going to approve this, then what does that say about what they think the N54 can handle without reliability issues.

probably gonna be on the same level as Dinan. you pay after all the extended warranty on the engine plus the flashing.

Quote of the month. If they are pushing the N54 to these levels, then BMW has nothing but a strawman argument that the aftermarket tunes are pushing the engines beyond their stated capacity or tolerance levels.

It doesn't mean that they could hold the stance that a direct flash with full awareness of BMW programming is more reliable than a piggy with outside manipulation - but it is getting into pretty gray territory.

BMW already demonstrated a 400bhp N54 for an upcoming Z4 model. I think it was in Roundel about 1.5 yrs ago. I think it's becoming obvious the engine can handle up to that without serious risk. The question in my book is how much more can it handle beyond the 400 mark?

Not even close...

Disclaimer: I'm an aircraft mechanic, and will freely admit I don't know FA about automobile engine tuning.

The bottom line was 6K. Hang on, that's EURO. Do the math.

I don't have a good frame of reference... but I'm guessing to pump a powerplant up that high AND support a warrantly that price has to include more than R&D. Wouldn't surprise me if BMW wants more robust components at the critical failure points...

Just guessing here.

Holy sh!t. 6000 euros? Why wouldn't someone just get an M3 instead of this upgrade at that price. Please forward any information you receive about this tune and if there are any component upgrades involved. It would be great insight to what BMW is thinking about the engine.

yeah thats just stupid. You can run full out race setup on V3 or JB3 and IF you blow your turbo's.....get them replaced for less than 6k. The engine is another story though.

I,m pretty sure the N54 can handle a whole lot more power than any of us think it can.

This is nothing new.

AC Schnitzer already has had a tuning kit out for months, and presently costs exactly 7460,57 (EUR!), VAT included. Gives you the same performance as the Alpina B3 Biturbo (360 HP crank, 500 Nm), but includes besides the ECU flash also a quad exhaust (muffler only) and a new speedometer. You cannot buy these things separately but only as a package, and even for that the price is really prohibitive. Especially if you take into account that for less extra charge you get from Alpina 18" wheels, their aerodynamics package and new pistons for the motor.

Prices for ECU flashes in Germany with renowned tuners like Noelle or Evotech or Kelleners cost presently around 2500 EUR, and a new speedo is available at 700, new Eisenmann muffler are another 1600 (and these are the most expensive). If you add all this, you still come considerably short of what ACS asks for.

If you want to go the aftermarket way, you get for the same money a lot more from other vendors. Noelle's 400 HP tuning option includes also an additional oilcooler and a complete exhaust solution with metal cats. Considering this, ACS has a rather bad cost/performance ratio IMO.

You can look it up yourself on the ACS website: http://preisliste.ac-schnitzer.de/acs_kpl/index.html

And after a tuning by ACS your warranty with BMW does NOT include the tuning. This has always be the case and will also be like this in the future. The only "tuning" with an "official" warranty serviced by BMW is Alpina.

BMW Tune ?

don't see this happening if BMW is working on their own tune. this would be competition against itself...?

I think the OP is wrong or understood it wrong. Its not "full BMW factory warranty", it's just "warranty". ACS warranty is just like the Dinan's: they just take over the warranty of your engine over the standard BMW warranty period.

Considering what a pizza costs in Zürich, that translates to about 200 pizzas. Or 500 BigMacs.

Really going to be interesting to see what BMw Performance charges for the tune, H2O pump, and IC mods.
