Wife needs a new car (currently 996 911 C4)
Hi,
I was wondering what anyone would suggest as a replacement car for the wife. She currently drives (and loves) her silver 2001 996 911 with a few extra body bits to make it look sporty (original Porsche option I believe). Anyway she has nearly hit 100K on it and it time for a change, but what to get? I guess realistically the budget is about 20-25K including whatever part / ex value (she hates finance so wants to pay cash). The only other thing I can think of is an Audi TT, we don't need a really big car (but 4WD for winter would be good) and if we can get a toddler in the back that would be great (so no Boxsters). Only used for commutes at the moment so I'm wondering whether a soft-top might be a nice change. Any other ideas (excluding anything from Renault, Ford, Vauxhall)? Thanks Adam |

RS4's tend to attract the wrong type of attention from some nasty people.
I wouldn't be happy with my loved ones alone in one. Not scaremongering-just fact. |

I know it's not AWD. but what about an E93? You have the security of a hard folding top four seats and it's a BMW

Can't you just buy her a bike off off Ebay/Gumtree and nick her budget and buy a M3 (you can fit a kiddy seat in one)?
I'd at least suggest it, at least one of you would be thinking of the polar bears

What about a newer 997 Carrera?. Think the 'S' may be out of budget, but both fantastic cars with a reliable water cooled engine!!
Or like you say a new shape TT in black or even white for a girl!

I think he might struggle to get any 997 for £25k with much less leg showing.

I was going to suggest an E93 earlier but thought it was too predictable; a nice 330i (or 335i!) would be nice to have. Oh, what about an A5 cab, thinking about it, that's my choice.

4wd, 4 seat convertibles are very rare even the TT you mention is only a 2 seater in roadster form. Only options I can think of are another Porsche or an Audi A4/A5.

Thanks everyone.
I found a few nice e93's in various colours and options for 25K, quite a few engine options too (although the 330d seem popular). The only concern from the wife was getting stuck in the snow as I have done with my e92. I think the bigger audis (A4 / A5) would look like she has borrowed my car. The TT I thought was a good female choice but the lack of 4 seats means we would use it less. If it was my choice I'd probably go for a Z4 convertible with the folding metal roof (again only 2 seats) but looks nice. I'll look around at the used Porsche sites as it might be easier to just get another one and find some extra cash. |

I think she might get another 911 now. I've found a 997 in Black with 4WD and looks pretty good with some options although it is 10K more than we were going to spend but if you spend 25K and get a car you aren't that happy with it really is a waste of money. Might as well get something you actually love to drive:

Correct about the waffle. I originally found it on AT and it said 40K on the clock I think and it did have internal pictures.
I have no ideas about the alloy wheels - must admit I've not seen many of those about. I'm assuming it was an option at POS, if we move forward on this one I'll see if I can get all the codes (or whatever they are called) and determine if this was a later change. |

If you want one, I would recommend going OPC. The cheapest C4S (with lowish miles) on the Porsche approved site is £37.5K, it has 33000 miles, and that comes with two years of Pork warranty and will be well sorted at the point of sale. That price is before haggling, that makes the original car you posted look well over priced. I would offer the OPC £35K for theirs, the mark up is huge - I have the proficiency badge to prove that!
