When it comes to X35i dynos, ESS has a lot prove. So far I'm not convinced of the power of this tune, but I would like to be.

Changing from Dinan Stage 2 to ESS Stage 4 Questions
I am interested in your Stage 4 flash. I currently have the Dinan Stage 2 flash so I am wondering how I would need to handle the situation if I wanted to change to your flash? I am figuring that I would want to take my car to the dealer to get flashed back to stock, but the only problem is that they are going to ask me why I would do such a crazy thing. I don't want to say that I am going to change my tune to something else because then I fear they would deny me my regular BMW warranty back. Should I just say the power of the Dinan is too much for me or something crazy like that lol? I don't like being dishonest, but I am just trying to figure out the best way to handle this situation without completely screwing me out of any warranty coverage at all. Does anyone here know how this works in terms of getting the BMW warranty back after removing the Dinan?
ESS, I am wondering if I can just send my DME to you guys to flash over the existing Dinan software? If for some reason I needed to have warranty work done and needed to be flashed back would you be able to flash my car back to my original Dinan tune or would it be a stock BMW map...which I am thinking would then cause flags at the dealer if they find the stock maps in place when they expect to see the Dinan flash when going through things thoroughly in the case of whatever crazy warranty nightmare that I would be hypothetically facing in such a situation. Damn that was a long sentence lol. Anyway, I am hoping for some insight on how to handle this situation, so if anyone other than ESS has any advice or experience with changing from Dinan to something else please let me know your experience with the process. That all being said I am wondering what to expect with Stage 4 and what supporting mods will be needed? What kind of power figures are you shooting for and what exactly will be going on to make these gains possible over Stage 3? I currently have AR HFC Downpipes, Full CPE exhaust (no secondary cats), AFE Intake / RPI Scoops, and Forge DV's as far as engine performance mods go. I would be upgrading my intercooler at the same time I get this flash done to minimize down time on my car. Are there any other things that are needed for the Stage 4 flash? What differences are there going to be from the Stage 3 in terms of power / driveability and whatnot? How much boost is it going to be running? Will it still be 15 psi max like Stage 3 but with more power across the rev-range? I don't want to push the turbos past their limits so I am wondering what you can tell me about this? From what Andrew at AR Design told me your software will make sure to not overspin the turbos which he said is something that is possible with piggyback systems. I wonder if you can comment on this point? Also, another thing I am considering is if I wanted to upgrade to your flash from the Dinan before I got the intercooler what flash would I get and how much power would I expect to make (would have the downpipes, intake, and exhaust)? I'm just curious because I am weighing the choices of doing the flash with the mods I have now and then waiting a few months to save up for the intercooler and then get it reflashed again to take advantage or if I should keep my current Dinan tune and just wait and to do it all at once. I think that with the pricing of $750 for this flash you guys are going to be looking at a very big fan base very soon so keep up the good work and thank you for putting such a great product to market at such a reasonable cost. Being an e90post member sure does have it's rewards! Please let me know about these questions (sorry there are so many...obviously I want to do my research before making such a crucial decision). This is something that I would like to plan for in the time for the summer so I'd like to start figuring out all the details in advance...Thanks!

I have a quick question. Would it be beneficial to get the latest greatest Progman flash from my dealer before sending in my DME?

No, ESS always uses the latest progman. So basically you will get a software update along with the tune anyway.
Alpina_B3_Lux P.S. ESS has posted a message about the stage 4 flash here:http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...8&postcount=12

Oh shit, thanks a lot ESS! Now I have to figure out how to convince my wife this is a good idea.... haha
I hadn't considered a tune before because I didn't want a piggy back and felt the only flash available was too expensive. This is exactly the answer to my question. I think flashing the DME is a most excellent way to tune. That's the reason I didn't hesitate to tune my VW or Subaru, they were all done by flashing the computer. And its definitely icing on the cake if you've fixed issues like poor throttle response and jerky transmission in the automatics. $750 is also an excellent price point. It's pretty close to what tuning my VW cost and not too much more than the Subaru tune. Definitely a cost even the most casual modders might consider. p.s. I forgot to ask how long the introductory pricing will be? It might be a couple weeks before I can park the car to remove the DME. |

There is also some data that can't be changed by a flash (like changing a DME from MSD80 to 81 and vice versa for example). BMW has made some great changes since the first Progman in the newer cars, it is not a bad idea to keep it updated. Where as our competitors don't like when BMW comes out with new software and obstacles to overcome, we work hand in hand with Germany and welcome them. |

The flash has very good response across all Progmans, regardless of oldest or newest. You would feel a marked improvement.

Hey folks - I've put a bunch of miles on the ESS stage 4 map and posted my review a days ago, here : http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246647, in case you haven't seen it.
Todd and ESS are good people - if you're on the fence, maybe this will be the gentle push you need. Thanks again Todd! |
