If you want to steer between cost and perceived value for the next buyer: option B at a BMW independent.

I say perceived value because I question how much a full BMW service history is worth when you can buy a blank service book already stamped up with “genuine” stamps, on eBay.

I’m firmly in option D on all my cars: take photo of mileage, the work in process, the parts used, invoices for the parts and put them in a folder.

I've just done mine. Kept invoices for oil and filter. And will continue to do so. Some things aren't worth the bmw premium..

I get mine done at BMW but that's just for ease of warranty situation (and convenient for me).

I'd have no issues with B on a car that i'd be buying.

Unless you have an M car that you sell after maybe a few months or short years of ownership, I can't imagine forking out for BMW services ever pays off.

I bought 8 litres of castrol oil for £50 and the filter for about a tenner. I like to do oil changes every 5000 miles. That would cost me a fortune using BMW so I now do it myself.

Exactly this going by bmw service schedule would put me off more by only having 1 oil change every 15k.

For me, option A every single time. I would never even consider buying a second-hand car that didn't have a full main dealer service history.

As yours has a main dealer history up to now, and you say that you may not keep it for long, why would you rule out a large percentage of potential buyers just to save a few quid?

Plus the other options will void the AUC (if there's any left) and possibly prevent you from taking out an Extended Warranty. And good luck with any goodwill claims on a car that's been serviced outside the BMW network.

If you use the correct oil there's no issues, mines always had the oil changed when the car tells me it needs it, I've owned it for almost six years and it's now covered over 108k on original turbos & injectors

Only option D would void the warranty.

Nope - that would be true of a new car warranty (where any VAT registered garage using the correct parts and schedule can service the car), but not of an AUC or Extended Warranty which require BMW dealer servicing.

Nope. There is an email floating round somewhere from the Extended Warranty people saying that as long as genuine parts are used and the garage is VAT registered, the warranty is valid.

Plus, i used to have the extended warranty and never used BMW for the sevicing and they paid out on a decent sized claim.

I really don't understand this mentality. A 335i is a niche car. BMW's prices are utterly ridiculous. Full Main deal history is a load of bollocks. Most dealers will give a oil change to a apprentice, and if you think they know more about these cars than a good quality indie, then frankly you are clueless.

Keep wasting ya money though.

Every single time i've taken a car to bmw for a service they have bodged the job and damaged the car.

All the simple service work is give to the lowest tech they have and they dont give a monkeys about your car, its just a job number to them, to get out as soon as possible.

I use a BMW indy (who still works for bmw) to do all my work and he has enough time to do the job correctly, I've never ever had a problem with him or the work he does, he treats the car better than his own.

I hate taking mine to the dealer for the recall work as there is always something wrong when i get it back, (they scuffed and marked the sill when they had it the last time, all they needed to do was put a sheet over the sill FFS).

Option B or C mate.

I would get it done at your work. Buy correct ll04 oil and mann or equivalent filter .... keep receipts and stamp it at work. In my eyes a full cost of BMW service history and resale value with it doesn't get u that much more cash than with a part BMW.....part independent history. It might be a more attractive buy but basically the same car. I don't think it's worth the money. I tend to do more work to my car myself and I'm no mechanic but im confident enough. I've owned my E93 335i for over 3 years now and serviced and replaced parts.. .. Probably saved at least 3 grand than going to the dealer.... I'll not lose 3 grand when I sell it though..... sorry I ramble on a bit... lol. Tbh if u only keep the car a year ... Defo go option C. I'm option D if I can manage to do it myself.. :-)

Incorrect.

I had my car serviced twice at an indy. Went to bmw for some warranty work and had no issue claiming under the BMW insured warranty. This was in 2013 and the claim was £5k!

Nil point.

OP: I'd go with option C (as long as you paid for labour at whatever rate) and keep the receipts for parts/oil to evidence the correct spec etc.

Wrong!

I took my e90 to an indy for servicing and bought the parts from the dealer. Never had an issue with warranty claims!

I prefer indy because my mechanic lets me stand around while the servicing takes place. Such a blast!

I'd say do oil/filter changes yourself and keep record. Take it to a BMW indy once a year to do all other work. Keep records. Should be no problem selling the car with them records. As above, BMW looks good on the books, but in reality probably do a worse job than an indy or even yourself.

Thanks for all your replies!

I'm going to get it done @ my work. Reason being is I trust the guys that work here and know the way they work. The work will be done to a genuine standard and correct things checked/changed if required

It will have a complete vehicle inspection, oil and filter and micro filter change, CBS on I drive reset and stamp in the book

My main worry was majorly affecting the resale value of the car due to it not having full BMW history. But I will keep an invoice of the work that's been carried out with correct fluids and filters

I had better get it booked in for the recalls!

Thanks All

For warranty, car servicing has to be done at a Vat registered garage of choice. Otherwise they will reject the claim. Experience.

Onwards, forget bmw servicing. Those clowns charge a premium for botched jobs always. Much rather an enthusiast owned or a well known indy.

I buy my parts and take it to my indy who let's me in the garage and even allows me to get my hands dirty sometimes.
