Steering wheel phone button...

Is there anyway I can program the steering wheel phone button so that it calls up my phone address book via bluetooth as opposed to simply dialing the last number that I had dialed. It seems to operate only as redial. I really wish there was a way that I could have it open up my phonebook.

Don't know about programming the steering wheel phone button, but I programmed one of the six programmable buttons (below the CD slot) to display my phone's address book. Of course you know that you can also use the voice command system - just say "A to Z".

Strange. I don't use my phone much in the car for outgoing calls, but I'd swear mine behaved exactly the way you want it to: I pushed phone, my address book came up on the iDrive screen, I used the scroll wheel to select an entry, pushed it, then selected "call" (or some approximation thereof). FWIW, my phone is an iPhone. Perhaps the behavior changes depending on the phone's capabilities? The above was fours days ago, so I might have done this differently than described, but as mentioned, I don't place many outbound calls, so it was a moderately memorable thing to have done.

Try holding the button down instead of just hitting it.

I don't know if you can reprogram it though.

Holding down the button didn't work for me.

I programmed it to one of the buttons on the righthand side. So, when I press it, it opens up the phone book.

Holding down the button doesn't bring up the phonebook for me, either. I'm going to try that two-button method mentioned in the link above.

Here again is the content of the link. You need to do more then just press and hold down the phone button, you need to also press the up/down arrow button next to the phone button.

Ok, here is how I understand the way it works. Check your telephone manual for verification, press and hold down the telephone button, at the same time press the up/down arrow button, once you see a listing of you directory, let go of all buttons and use the up/down button to scroll through the list of names. at least this process works on my tmobile v330 phone!

This might be dependent on phone and provider as well. But I am very impressed that I can select the exact person I want to call using only buttons on the steering wheel.

Damn, I tried it today and it didn't work for me. It seems that the phone button just redials the last number if I'm not on a call. When on a call, it hangs up.

EDIT - wait, you say the up/down next to the phone button? I was doing the up/down on the right side (opposite the phone button). Shoot, now I have to try it with the button next to it.

BK, I was not being very clear. Ok, look at my photo. With my left hand, I press and hold the button with the telephone icon (red arrow), with my right hand, I press the up or down buttons with the up/down icon. Sometime I have to press the down button and sometime I have to press the up button (I am not sure why the inconsistence but it always work for me). Now you see how wonderful these buttons are, I have both hands on my steering wheel while I am pulling up my phone book listing. If I only press the phone button, then the system will repeat the last thing I did on the phone.

As said, it could be the phone type (motorolla v330), phone service provider type (tmobile), car progman version (23 I think), and car built date (4/2005 I think).

GL again.

D'oh, those are the ones I tried. I guess it doesn't work for me. I bet it's your phone type being cooler than mine. FWIW, my Progman is v25, phone is a VZW Blackberry, car build date is 6/06. Does this combination of button pushing work for anyone else?

Also, some other people have reported going to the phone book by pressing and HOLDING the phone button, rather than just quickly pressing it. That doesn't work for me, either. No matter what I do, it redials the last number.

If I really wanted, I could always assign a button to the phone book, but I like the setup I have now (next audio source and mute). For now, the voice command "call [name]" where [name] is the actual entry in the phone book works great. For numbers I don't call frequently, I've also had excellent success saying "Dial number" and then saying the number when prompted.

One quirk I noticed - if I set my BB phone book to list contacts last name, first name, then I have to say "call [name]" with the name backwards. Like "Call Smith John mobile" if I want to call John Smith's mobile number. If I set my BB to list contacts as first name, last name, then I say the name normally, but the address book is all sorted by first name (I hate that ).

It's ALWAYS redials my last number too, no matter if I press it fast or hold it down and use the arrow keys like the telephone manual says to do.

It drove me crazy at first so I just assigned one of the steering wheel short cut keys to access my phone book.

Yes. You firstly need to create a voice operated phone, where a name is given to number. You can then press the phone button on the steering wheel and ask that a name be dialled. Alternatively you can ask the system to list the names you have programmed in your vioce activated phonebook. Direction on set-up should be available in one of the supplementary manuals that came with new car. Hope this helps. Tomkat.

First, you are referencing the voice command button, not the phone button.

Second, there is no need for that - he can just use the command ,,Dial John Smith`` (presuming John Smith is listed thusly in his phone´s directory) and using speech-to-text technology, the system will dial John Smith.

Jonathan - I think that command only works for iDrive-equipped E9x, based on previous posts here. For non-iDrive I think the command is "Dial name" and then it has you spell the name. I have iDrive, so I can't confirm the latter.

In any case, that's what I do, as I mentioned above. I think you're right that the correct command is "Dial John Smith" but for some reason, my car misinterprets that command all the time. When I say "Call John Smith" it works every time. The car responds with "Would you like to call John Smith?" You respond "yes" and it dials.
