The cabin air filter is definitely something you can DIY. It costs about $40 to get a new filter and simply removing a couple of screws off of a cover to replace the filter...and maybe 30 min at most of your time. No need to pay $140 for that service.

I took them all off the other day to change spark plugs and those pieces didn't make any sense, just a flimsy piece of plastic to make the engine bay look more clean.

Although I will admit that if you don't like the look of exposed hoses and you pop your hood often then I would probably just replace the cabin air filter you already have and keep all the plastic there.

Have you looked at your maintenance schedule?

There's an "old school" schedule out there that you can find by googling. It's more than BMW recommends in the manual, but might be better if you plan to keep it a long time.

Doesn't BMW recommend you come in every 5k miles in the manual? Looking online at maintenance schedules I see something every 5/10k miles.
