Car key stolen - Replace key or locks?

Hey guys

My house was broken into last night - and the guy had the audacity to take my E90 320i car key.

Because the car key was stolen from my house, I am worried that he might come back to try to steal the car another day.

So instead of just getting a replacement key, I called BMW Canterbury and they quoted me a whopping $2400 for a completely new set of locks!!!

Surely there has to be an easier/cheaper way to do this? Any thoughts/experiences?

Another option is you can have them delete the old key from the CAS memory. The metal key will still work in the key hole but they won't be able to start the car or unlock with the remote.

You can then also do the keyhole delete on the driver's door, but there will still be the trunk keyhole.

In your case, i will pay them $2400 for new locks.Think this way, will you prefer geting cheaper option but with bigger lost possibillity? or a more expensive secure option with peace of mind? I'm sure your are smart enough to make the decision!

The thing is that the car's probably only worth about $25,000 so should I really spend 1/10th of the value of the car for locks?

We were planning to sell the car anyway so maybe the better option might be to get a new key and sell it ASAP.

Option A: change the key and remove all valuables from the car; or
Option B: up the agreed value of the car with your insurer and see what happens

Option C: Buy a hundred dollar steering lock and they are going no where... and/or get a kill switch fitted to your car... cheap as.

when a key gets stolen, it should be a valid motor claim on your car insurance... just pay your excess and they should get the locks replaced for you.

the other (cheap) option is to just code it (remotely from someone cheap) to have the other key removed as a valid key. yes, they can use the physical key to get in, but they won't be able to start the car...

First I would get that key to not work with the car so they can not start it. Then I would look into how hard it would be to replace the door locks myself.

Leave the car outside(give it a good wash so its attractive) setup cameras around, put a tracker on the car (i think bmw's already come with trackers) and if you like hide in the trunk. revenge

To the OP.. 335i's (and thus I presume 320i's) can have a maximum of two FOB's linked to the car at any one time. The idea being if you loose a FOB (or have one stolen), when the dealer provides a new FOB and this is synced with your car (as I did with my own), the "lost" key will no longer work, without first being initialised (which required the other key!)

So whilst the owner of your stolen key maybe able to unlock the car with the key they have, they will not be able to start it.

And, we are talking crooks here, they are that f-ign dumb, they probably dont even know how to remove the emergency key from the fob.

My advice, have your insurer replace the key and move on, not worth the effort and potential damage of having all new locks installed!

Did you sync a blank key to your car yourself, or did you get the dealer to do it?

I've decided to bring my car to a dealer to have them delete the stolen key from the system and live with one key for the time being.

I'll probably replace it when we finally sell the car.

Just for everyone's interest, I called three dealers - Sylvania, Rushcutters and Canterbury.

The guys at Sylvania didnt have a clue as to what I wanted done - he didn't even know that you can only have 2 fobs to one car.

Rushcutters knew what to do, but told me I had to book in advance and that it'd take an entire day to do.

Canterbury told me to go past tomorrow and that they could do it in 45 mins while I enjoyed a free coffee and do some test driving.

I know they can sometimes get a bad rep but the guys at Canterbury have always treated me well.

Where do you get this information?
CAS control unit can have a maximum of 10 keys associate to it. So all 10 keys can work on the car.
All of the 10 keys can be activate or de-activate through a diagnostic machine. Manual key will still work, but remote key will stop working after it's been disabled.
