But now EU regs allow Indys to do full reprogramming, and even sell on / fit / load BMW performance remap kits, the link with BMW's systems has been broken.

They can no longer keep track of individual vehicles and how many times the vehicle has been reprogrammed and to what level etc.

Mine had its HPFP replaced and 2 or 3 days of tests / update before hand done under warranty.

It went in with the JB3 attached, modded suspension, catch can etc. It had 25k on it and zero service history as far as they knew (100% non BMW history)

They never mentioned anything, just got on with it

TBH Franchises are not in the game of refusing warranty work (paid for by BMW UK) if they can help it,

Remember Dealers are NOT BMW UK they are private businesses and wherever they can do lucrative warranty work and get paid for it they will do.

You can be sure any hoops dealers have to jump through are being driven by BMW UK to reduce warranty costs, if the dealers can ignore or get around it they will - they just want to get paid.

That was basically what the dealer said, they did not care if the car was tuned or not but because the note was on my file they couldn't risk BMW uk not paying out.

So did you have the car mapped or was it someone else and then you bought it off them?

As people have been saying the fact that you can go to an indy now and have the car reprogrammed says it all.

I remember having a Seat Leon Cupra R, had it mapped cats removed etc and Seat never said a word. Infact they asked me where I had it done as they wanted to recomend other customers.

I had the same (Seat), infact I sold 2 cars to friends for them and the dealer asked "would you like it remapped".

I used to come across this too. VAG dealers offering third party maps was slightly at odds with the manufacturer stalking forums to catch people out.

Sorry to drag this old thread up but it seems that BMW are now doing this when cars are plugged into the diag machine. A friend of mine has a guy at BMW that does all of his work, the BMW techy has been trained on the new system and has even plugged my friends car in to show him what the output is like and what has been excluded from the warranty. (I saw the photo of the output)

The BMW guy has found 3 or 4 cars in the last couple of weeks alone so it does show you that they will be checking every car that is plugged in.

Just a heads up guys!!

Assume this is only really an issue for maps and not the JB chips that piggyback the stock ECU?

I hope you're not suggesting people on here have mapped their cars and still take them in for warranty work!

The outrage bus will be along shortly

Not necessarily.
If you have latent codes that are the result of tuning, then that will also ring bells.

Am I wrong in assuming that if you have cleared all shadow and hard codes the only way they could detect anything would be to scrutinise the adaptations? Which would by their very nature, readapt once the tune was removed for a couple of days or so?

I doubt they would tell you much.

In may respects a piggyback in 'pass through mode' is less obvious, in so much as the data in the DME remains absolutley untouched.
However, it is visible.
