Key - only from a dealer ?
Evening
I need a spare key for my car... I am guessing that paying full whack from a dealer is the only way to get one ? cheers |

Yep......
And be prepared to undogo MI5 style security checks in order to get a spare (which I agree with) No coding required, key will work directly from the factory.

You could be talking big money. When I bought mine they actually gave me 3 keys. For some reason they prepared a 3rd one. On the (trade) invoice between the service dept. and sales it was c£100 plus VAT. £86 for the key plus £14 for the metal key to be cut.
I would appeal to the seller for one FOC or even try the previous owner - he may still have it - who knows. |

I have been quoted £160 for a new spare key..you will need your driving licence, v5 logbook and it should be ready within the next working day. Not sure if i can afford that at the moment.

Yeah..good question. Can you not buy a cheap second hand key from ebay and get the dealer to cut and code it. Wouldn't that be a cheaper option? I need a spare key myself..let me know if u do get anywhere with this mate. Cheers.

This question has come up before on these forums though I can't find it - easily anyway (the search button is not always your friend) but the upshot was that buying a key fob on e-bay or anywhere other than officially was and is a complete waste of time and money and it also applies to a lot of other modern cars as well.
Originally, the fob was only the control for the central locking but it is now the authorising unit for the specified car with all sorts of codes sent and received so it stands to reason that a random fob isn't going to be compatible with your car. You have to get a fob from the factory which is programmed for your car and no one else. One reason why our cars are seldom stolen by opportunistic thieves. |
