just make sure you let us know how it turns out....and post pictures too please! i'm sure a lot of people would like to do the same if it turns out the e46 knob fits.

i am going to get my hands on a e46 illuminated knob at my dealership and try it. i just love the night red glow on the knob.

hi spacedogg, i will be using the z4m illuminated gear knob instead of e46 m3 illuminated knob.
this is because the m3 gearknob comes with the boot and the e46 boot base and e90 boot base are not compatible. - the shape is different.

artz 330 has tried the e90 knob on his black z4 m coupe and he says it is compatible. will reuse my original stock leather boot.

will post pics when it is installed.

The pic below is a picture of the e36 illuminated 5 speed gear knob. lovely!!

I just swithched my OEM short knob for the Whalen Shift Machine (pollished SS). I thought that the OEM short, though indeed shorter throw, made the box feel efen notchier than the OEM long. THe super heavy Whalen looks great installed (I'll post pics later this week when my pedals and 19" m6's are installed), and the weight really makes the throw feel more solid and smoother. The drawback is the fact that it always feels too cold or too hot, depending on the air temp, and it takes a long time to change temp. I generally flick the knob and go back to the wheel, so it's not a big issue for me, but if I lived in AK or AZ, it would be a big disadvantage.

I ordered the "Old" E46 M-Sport Shift Knob (aka E46 ZHP Knob)- BMW Part #: 25117896886 yesterday. My dealer has it in now, so I'll be picking it up tonight.

I'm really looking forward to replacing the long, light-weighted, and cold (in the winter, anyway) stock metal shifter.

I'll post my thoughts on my new (old) shifter after I've had some time shifting with it.

Cheers.

I got the E90 M knob and it works and looks great. Slowly but surely morphing into the whole M-sport package.

Keep in mind that Doug Whalen will engrave almost anything on the top of the knob.... or do something different. I had a MINI MCS with the "Se7en" interior design from England; therefore he did a 7-ball for me. Took a regulation pool ball and added the parts to make it work. Loved it, as it was never too cold or hot to touch, but added some extra weight from stock.

Update: I've been using the "Old" E46 M-Sport Shift Knob for about 6 months. I really do like it. Although...I've been recently wondering if I want to try another type...just for the heck of it. Perhaps something a little heavier.

So lately...I'm deciding if I should try out the UUC Motorwerks Rob Knob 2...or if I should wait until the new M3 comes out and see what type of the gear knob it uses. Looking at the Concept 2008 M3 interior shots...it has a huge chunk of metal as a knob. Looks quite nice actually...part leather/part metal so the knob doesn't look it will get too cold/hot.

What do you guys think?

OEM BMW shift knob

How about that one? It looks heavier and has the same OEM shape, instead of just a ball.

Yuck, that suede on the steering wheel is hideous and so is that shifter...

Just wondering if any of ya'll have experience with LeatherZ knobs. This one looks similar to the stock E90 knob, but has the ///M emblem and is illuminated. Supposedly it'll fit various models, and I'm interested in trying it out once my 335i comes in. Here is a pic, and the website for it is http://leatherz.com/Merchant2/mercha...egory_Code=E46

This is going to be a painful choice. I'd like something with at least a bit of CF as well as an athracite cover.
