VIN error in NCSexpert

I am trying to use NCS expert and BMW tools to edit some features in the CAS like digital speedometer and removing the legal warning in iDrive, Etc. when I try to load the man file in NCS expert I get an error about wrong VIN number. the only thing I can think of is that I have used a software a couple times before trying to learn coding with my other E93. But what I did was deleted all the other man files and TRC files that were in the work folder. I did move some from that old car to a folder called backup in the work folder. any idea what's going on?

If you are just starting on this car make a new backup of the
whole car the way you did when you started . Then start reading
out the modules you are interested in the way you first
did . That way all the data you are manipulating is coming from the
car you are working on.
Remember where it sayed to name the man file you invoke to
work on the car an to use it each time you work your car
You need a new one for the new car.
So unless someone has swapped some modules in from another car
you should have matching vin numbers.
You should also be able to check the VIN's in the modules that have
them in files you read out.
You might even want to make a sub folder and put your new
or old cars info in the appropriate one so as to not get confused
and when naming backup man files give the file name some designation
that will id which car it came from.

Also as a sanity check for actual VIN number compliance go to Inpa functional
jobs and read out the hardware and software versons of your vehicle.
The vin number will be displayed for each module that has one.

See bimmerprofs page 1 for functional jobs page one module hardware software id display.
F3. Menu “User Information Field” contains information regarding UIN and VIN of units.

thanks for the info. I clobbered through coding several months ago on my first 2007 E93. I recently bought this 2008 E93 and swapped my drivetrain into it. I did keep the 2008 DME where's the 2008 car so I didn't swap any modules when I swap the engine and transmission. I was able to Rico's this DME yesterday with the injector values of the new engine are swapped in okay.
I am still not 100% confident in how you backup each module which I would definitely want to do. My backups for the 2007 car are in a subfolder called "backup" but maybe it's causing problems because that folder is still within the "work" folder.

PS when I do a read in inpa it does show the correct cars VIN number

What if I just deleted all the files in the work folder? I can't remember if they're supposed to be a dummy file in there to start with or not?

You don't need to delete anything.

In NCS choose the module, choose the job (codierdaten_lesen), go to work folder, open FSW_PSW.trc file in notepad, make your changes, save the file as FSW_PSW.MAN in work folder then go back to NCS and change the job to SG_CODERIEN.

every time you read a module, the FSW_PSW.trc will be refreshed.

Also, I personally do not backup any coding data. Things can change in firmware. And in any case, your coding is effectively backed up by your VO. If things get messed up just Expert code the module to default VO and everything is back to factory settings.

Thanks, that seems to clarify it for me. I am so used to the usual habits of data where you back up in case of loss. maybe the problem came from me using BMW tools to make the changes. I did open man file that I saved and it did have the changes I wanted. I'm just going to write down the names of the few things I wanted to change and then just change them manually in WordPad.

The fist thing they as you to do is make a back up of the entire
car in one fell swoop, That is why you have the large 225kbit file which
is a combo of all the modules . Basicly it is your VO.
When you start coding you read on by module basis then make changes
and put then back in that module.
When you add options to the VO it makes a new large file that is
stored in the Frm and Cas.
Then to get those changes to the modules added or subtracted you must
default or I would call it VO code the module.

I may be using the wrong "profile" to start with. My choices are
Delafult profile
Manipulation
Factory coding
Expert mode
Factory reset
Feature coding
FSW PSW MAN

I think I was supposed to use FSW PSW MAN, but I have tried feature coding and I still get errors when I hit F1

I feel like an idiot. I was simply renaming the file FSW_PSW instead of "saving as" so it was still a .TRC file.

Backing up your data change is not a bad idea.
If you take your car into BMW and they do a recall
or replace something the car gets returned to stock setting
and you have to figure out what it was all over again.
