What is the approximate service life of the M-diff?
From what I've been able to research, it's a viscous diff and might need a rebuild as soon as 60K-80K? Does anyone know how much lock-up it provides?

It doesn't lock up because it doesn't have plates.

Sorry, worded my question wrong. What amount of slip does it allow between axles?
Obviously this diff would be inferior to some aftermarket options, but the price point is attractive if one were to find a low mileage one...

I'm not sure, how much slip. Since it is hydrolic, and pump operated, the newer the pump, the better the limiting. By like 60K miles, as others have mentioned, you need to change out the pump, and at that point its pretty much an open diff.

Okay, i thought it was just a good old viscous plate diff (kinda like a torque converter). -Is this a mechanical internal pump? -Is replacing the pump the only thing that needs to be done (no internal rebuilding)? sorry for the tidal wave of questions...

Huh.... are you sure about the M-diff
http://www.bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=21 "What is the M Variable Differential Lock and how does it work? The Variable M Differential Lock, fitted as standard equipment to every E60 M5 sedan and E61 M5 Touring, is an advanced version of the traditional limited slip differential that was jointly developed by BMW M and GKN Viscodrive. Though still entirely mechanical in operation, the M Variable Differential Lock is activated when there is a difference in rotational speed between the two rear wheels. This difference pressurizes a viscous silicon fluid, which then operates a multi-disc clutch that directs more power to the wheel with the greatest traction." Think Killerfish is correct! |

Great!
Does anyone know the cost/complexity of rebuilding the unit? Best i could find was for $1,650.00 (from jackstransmissions.com) Add that to ~$500.00 for the used diff and ~100.00 for the driveshaft, and we have a $2,250.00 + install cost, worst case scenario LSD upgrade. A brand new Wavetrac upgrade is $2,000.00 for a welded diff even. Looks like this will only be worth it if the M diff is pristine (<10k) and well priced...

The M3's M Variable locking differential is genius when it's working properly. Unfortunately, as many M3 owners have come to find, the system only has a service life of 80,000 miles (sometimes less) and then the viscous unit inside starts to fail (is your's clunking?). We can rebuild the internals and bring it back to a perfectly-functioning viscous M Variable unit. Or you may choose to lose the variable lock in favor of a traditional clutch-type or helical diff with a set locking |

^$500 bucks doesnt sound to bad for a OEM LSD....I spent a whole lot more going a different route but still have to say, one of the best mods I have done yet. The handling characteristics, the overall improved driving dynamics of having a LSD, and much much more....It would have been nice to see an OEM piece that could bolt right up to our car without much fab work whatsoever. But I'm probably dreaming lol. BMW has to make there money and buying a M diff from them...is well...the stealership haha.
the E90's and E92's should have def come with a LSD in them...Or atleast the M-sport pak or the IS versions.... Also, If im not mistaken, I heard that someone directly fit a e46 m3 LSD on their E92????? Any facts on that and if so how is it going with that. I already have one but still interested to see how much money I could have saved lol...
