First track event of 2012!

My driveway is still covered in snow and yet I'm signing up for the first track event of the year.

PCA Schattenbaum, 3/17-18, 1st day in NJMP Thunderbolt, 2nd in Lightning.

The weather can go either way, last year was freaking cold but manageable. Typically I don't sign up for these in advance but it's hard to deal with the winter track withdrawal
I already see 11 cars registered, an M3, an S4 and P-cars. Hope you guys can join!

can i ask what you guys did to your car for track purposes? I dont know if my car can doo a couple laps, im afraid of over heating, brakes, shitty tires.

Your car in stock is more than capable at the track, especially if this is your first time. You shouldn't be tinkering with the car until you can produce consistent times but right now driver skill is your only limiting factor. The only thing I would do is a full brake flush with some high temp stuff (Motul or ATE Blue) and ensure you have enough meat on both your pads, rotors and tires.

Yes there's a chance your car could overheat (more of an issue with the n54 but I doubt that'll be an issue considering you won't be pushing the car that hard and the temps are so cold).

I was going to hold off until June but I'm going through withdrawal as well, sigh... I've heard good things about PCA Schattenbaum so good chance I'll be there.

Go for it!

These guys provide the most track time per day (excluding open track days) of all clubs, usually 6 x 20min or 5 x 25min sessions and some of the most enjoyable events overall. At least in my group I get to chase mostly GT3s, TTs, GTRs, corvettes and Catherhams all day long. Can't go wrong with that!

Other than a brake fluid change (required), and having someone check your car, you don't need to do anything else for your 1st track day. You can even borrow a helmet from the club. Instruction-wise, you're better off starting with a BMW CCA event, they have by far the best instruction program to get you going. Later on you'll find other clubs that favor more track time over instruction etc.

I have to warn you though, it's an awesome and very addictive sport. You do one event and you're hooked for life!

Shitty Tires: Since I bought my car in the middle of track season, I've been tracking on them to wear them down. Needless to say, they aren't bad. They aren't amazing but they will do enough for a few laps.

Brakes: Pads will probably hold up. Fluid may be of concern. Upgrade the fluid to something that'll stand it.

Overheating: Your instructor will probably tell you to not go WOT. Go slow, learn the lines, learn technique. Anyone can step on the gas. It takes skill to know when and how much.

I went to the last few PCA Schattenbaum events. They were not as well organized as the BMW CCA's but we did get a hell of a lot of track time. I think I was running in two groups on one of the days. Shhhhh =)

Hi all! I bought my first ever BMW a month ago. Used 2008 e92 M3.

I want to take it to the track, but have never done a trackday with a car before. But I am motorcycle roadracer.

I am glad I saw this thread because I thought the PCA was only for Porches.

Registration is open. Pick the Non-PCA Instructor-based option. Green group if it's your first time tracking a car.
