Local Teen Dead in M3 Crash

http://www.nbc4.com/news/16809135/detail.html

This wreck happened back on July 7th, but I was just talking to a friend of mine at work today about the car he got for his son. My friend is a MB enthusiast, and he bought a MB for his 18 year old son -- he bought him an older model E320 about a month ago.

He mentioned that his son's best friend got a BMW M3 right around the same time. The other teen only had it for 3 weeks before he crashed into a tree and rolled the car. He was killed instantly. The kid who died was his son's best friend since grade school. Alcohol apparently was not a factor, but speed was. I just did a Google search to see if there was a news report, and there was (linked above, not many details).

It was sad to hear my friend describe the funeral, how his son got up to talk, how the death impacted the other kids and the family, how the dad said "I'm not blaming myself, but if I could do it over again, I wouldn't get him a high-performance car." Makes me think twice about what I'm going to do when my son reaches that age.

Anyway, not much of a point here except -- take it easy out there!

That could easily be anyone at any age. Scares me every time I hear stories like that. Unfortunately, I'm oblivious to such stories when I'm driving. Sad.

my bad, I thought it was a 08.. thats the only M3 im paying attention to lately
if its the 95-99 series M3 its would be about 250HP, no enough in my book to kill a fly or bug thru a windshield.

what most likely happen was he left his car and got runover by an e92 M3 having DSC off

That sucks. Its a double edge sword as a parent I guess. You want them to appreciate crappy things as well as nice things in life. I know a lot of the younger Evo guys I hung out back in the days had too many close calls and even pretty bad wrecks. Mine had 544 to the wheels and treated it with respect. Many of them were rolling around with a bit less power thanks to being funded by the parents and just wrecking left and right.

ok...we all know you have a new M3...let's show some respect to the original poster and not make light of another auto related death...

high hp or not...some one made a mistake, some one died...

I think BK is making a point to all of us that life, whether lived behind the wheel of a BMW, or not, is a precious and fragile thing...and he is reminding us that we should be a bit more careful...

Short version -- I have a friend at work with an 18 year old son. He just bought his son a car, and I was asking about it. He mentioned that his son's best friend also got a car from his parents around the same time, a used M3. That kid drove it like a bat out of hell and killed himself in it just 3 weeks later. This happened in the local DC area.

I don't remember this making the local news, but we do hear about teens dying in car wrecks quite a bit around here. My friend said that at the funeral, the kid's dad mentioned the names of 4 or 5 other kids from his son's high school who had died in car wrecks within just the past couple of years.

Sad thing is that even if you get your own child a "safe" car, they could just as easily ride around with the inexperienced kid showing off in the performance car. Made me think of the Florida teen in the M5, driving off the airstrip and killing himself and 3 friends.

The post was nothing more than a stop and think moment for me. Some BMW content, and some Mid-Atlantic content. I don't know if anyone here knew the kid who died or if he was ever on this board, but I doubt it.

+1

It's sad to see someone so young pass away. Tragic accident indeed, my nephew just got his license and story like this makes my heart skips a beat when he takes the car out....

(this had nothing to do with cars that I own or have owned)
... to make a better case you'll observed posting of street racing mostly on the Board's performance section.
e90post mid-atlantic are pretty much chill-down kinda folks that are into GTG and socials. Still tragic in all cases, thks BK

just came off worded wrong Al...that was my point...not trying to knock against you (personally) or anything like that...

I feel strongly that statistics like the those mentioned in this thread take away credibility from enthusiast communities such as ours...

Everyone please drive carefully...
