Extend warranty/ maintenance or not?
I have a 2010 335i AT with 37000+ miles on it and the warranty/ maintenance is going to expire on the 22nd of this month. I'v already had the fuel injectors go bad and replaces the other month, I know that's common. my main thing is I don't want the turbos to randomly go on me. I'm kinda stressing a little much on this for I had my engine blow on me in my 04 325i I use to have and it wasn't modded. My 335i has no performance mods yet. I do have Allstate premier care/ premier care wrap protection plan that covers mass majority of everything but has a $500 deductible that is good for 100,000 miles.
I'm looking for honest opinions from others who drive 335i with around same year and millage who have had problems with there car with 37,000+ miles on it? Things that can go out around 50,000 miles and is the extended maintenance worth it on the 335i? Is there enough things that need to be replaced or tuned that are covered to make it worth it? the extension would be another 2 years so would expire with about 50-65k on the car. Thank you.

my BMW just came with the standard 4yr/ 50,000 mile warranty/maint. I'm just trying to justify if $2000+ for a extra 2 yrs is going to be worth the piece of mind. my after market warranty would cover most things with a 500 deductible so i don't see using that 4 times to equal the 2k. but with having the scheduled maintenance on top i could possibly justify it. I just don't know what would all be done on maintenance for the next 2 years that would equal up to being near 2k.

That's a tough one. I have a 2009 335i that I bought in July 2012 with 29000 miles. Full warranty expired Nov. 2012 and my CPO expires Nov. 2014. I have 56000 miles now. I just had turn signal replaced under goodwill ($380). A coil just went bad, and they replaced a bank of injectors, those were covered under CPO but totaled over $900 the work oders. I am on the original turbos, fuel pump, and most other problem parts. I am getting a walnut blast under CPO next week. If these things were not covered, that's a lot of coin to fork out. I do not want to own this car under no warranty, so I will likely trade in once CPO expires.

That's what I wish I could count on. for it to go 2 more years and not have any problems. what all maintenance stuff did you have done after your 4 year maintenance expired? and if you don't mind me asking what it all cost if any?

All my SA's keep saying that the walnut blasting is NOT covered under CPO or extended CPO. it would only be covered under factory warranty. Then again... my local indy can do the walnut blasting for $300.
I haven't had any major issues with my car, however I have an idle shake which is common, waste gate rattle on cold start up, and an Oil filter Housing gasket leak When I take it into the dealership for these items, the response i get is this: 1) Idle shake: * Could be carbon build up, not covered under CPO (told the SA I had carbon blasting done already (before and after the carbon blasting I had idle shakes). I've also already gone thru 2 sets of new plugs and still have the idle shakes (all out of pocket from me). I have no codes so no fix. They can't investigate it either since BMW won't approve the work. 2) Waste gate rattle - all the dealership SA's and service managers say is... the turbos are the best they have seen and some noise is expected. I have no codes and no decel rattle. 3) Oil filter Housing Gasket (OFHG) leak - not leaking bad enough, CPO won't cover it until it is gushing oil. I've had it like this for 10k miles and I'm still under extended CPO. * One of my ballast recently went out, it wasn't covered under CPO, bought a replacement ballast on ebay new for $175. I was told that the only thing covered under CPO is the FRM * MY TPMS sensors give me a strange error once in a while that goes away shortly after. it says CC ID 149 TPMS System INACTIVE, I brought it into the dealership in the evening while it was still in the error state and no one would hook it up to the computer to pull the codes (This happened at 3 different dealerships). They all say come back when you have an appointment. But with this issue... once I restart the car or reset the TPMS sensors, it works fine. No fix and no codes stored. OP also keep in mind you have a free 8year/82k mile warranty on the turbos OP you also have a 10year/120k mile warranty on your HPFP I really feel like these extended warranties are good for some people, but for people like me who have issues but it hasn't fully disabled my vehicle to leave me stranded on the road yet... they will not fix it. I'm pretty sure the shaky idle has to do with bad injectors. I'm willing to bet my TPMS issue has to do with the control module. But they don't want to authorize a repair because BMW NA will have to pay. They want to make sure we are disabled on the road before they pay one cent |

I wouldn't do the extended warranty through BMW and find a 3rd party...I use EasyCare. If you have the BMW, essentially BMW is out the funds if they do the work (i.e. you get more excuses that it's 'not that bad' and 'not covered')
With my 3rd party warranty where they weren't the ones essentially paying the bill, the dealer is actively looking for problems to get in under the deductible. Took it for a water pump and they replaced both front struts, a leaking valve gasket and a rear rotor...all under my warranty. I highly suggest EasyCare and they're also the only one (if I recall) that Motor Trend suggests as well. Edit: I said rear rotor and meant rear wheel bearing...rotor isn't covered and I've been researching brakes all day. Guess they're on my mind... Last edited by AggieATO; 03-07-2014 at 04:32 PM.. |

I bought a 4 year 3rd party warranty through my dealer for a very good price when my CPO warranty ran out. It covers quite a lot, and it's 0 deductible for work done at that dealer, and $100 deductible everywhere else. It's already paid for itself when they had to replace a major A/C component. Plus when I went in for some maintenance service, they noticed that the tensioner belt needed replacement, and that was covered as well. Still have until 10/2016 left, so I'm ahead of the game if anything else goes wrong. So yes, I absolutely believe in extended warranties for these vehicles!

I have added a poll to help see the percentage of members who would extend the warranty, maybe seeing a actual vote will help. Thanks everybody who has shared there stories and opinion.

Lol same here but Imdid extend the warranty. Again, for every two, "I got free turbos, water pump, and ten thousand worth of repairs, thank you BMW" posts, there are ninety eight others who got bupkis. Never buy an extended warranty.

For the overwhelming majority of people, an extended warranty is AT BEST pre-paying for a couple grand worth of repairs, and at worst flushing money down the toilet.
If you can't afford to fix a car, you can't afford that car.

I wouldn't buy the extended warranty. Just have money saved for repairs. Even my SA advised me to pass on it. I have been out of warranty for over a year and a half, and so far spent around $1,000 on repairs. Extended warranty is pre paided covered. Save your money.

I think you might be better off with a third party warranty - they last longer, for one, and for two, they cost about the same amount.
I paid a hair over $2k for mine from Route 66, and it covers me for an additional 8 years (from date of warranty purchase, NOT from date of vehicle build) or up to 100k miles. If your BMW warranty only adds two years, and costs the same, I can't see it being worth it. |

There is a difference between the maintenance coverage and extending the warranty. The maintenance plans only pay for scheduled maint. not for any repairs. It seems to me that neither are a good deal for you because of the short period you would have coverage and the small number of miles that you plan on traveling. In actuality these plans make a lot of money for the companies that sell them because odds are that most won't need them. If you have a reasonable risk tolerance you would be fine. Two grand or more is a lot to pay for 2 years of piece of mind in my opinion. I would bring my car in before the factory warranty expires and ask them to go through it with a fine tooth comb and repair anything that needs it. Then you should be fine. On the maintenance side you can do it yourself for a small fraction of the cost or bring it to an independent for about 60% of what a dealer charges.

I bought my 330i 4 years ago and bought a Route 66 extended warranty. Had a head bolt break and the company told me they don't cover broken bolts...wtf? I canceled the remainder of the warranty and haven't looked back. I have managed to fix the small issues myself. I was better off without the warranty.

I just paid $2,400 for 4 years / 48k miles through Route 66.
I would skip going the dealer rout to buy because they are always underwritten by insurance companies... never BMWNA. Also Route 66 came highly praised from my indie shop! |
