Castrol Edge TD or SLX

Right, here we go....

Booked my car in for the 1st service and was quoted £88 if I was going to supply my own oil. I bought 8 litres of Castrol Edge Turbodiesel 0w-30, turned up at the dealers and confirmed I was supplying the oil.

Waited for it to be carried out and was told that the bill was £260. I said that it wasn't, as I was suppling the oil. Anyway, it turns out that they used their own oil, which is apparently Castrol SLX LL04 0w-30.

They told me that this was better than the Edge TD and that I had come out better off (and they kept the 8 litres of oil that I supplied).

Can't seems to find a great deal of info on SLX vs Edge TD - are they bullshitting me?

you should be able to find out some info on the Opie oils website if not give them a call as this sounds very suspect, I can't understand why they would keep the oil you supplied ?!

They haven't charged me for any oil - if they have given me a better oil, then I'm happy. If it is inferior to the Edge TD, I'll be demanding another change.

Total cost of 1st service was:
£21 standard scope
£31.50 oil service
£9 waste disposal
£25.62 filter

Total with VAT £88.69, which I was quoted when I booked in

well that adds up to 175.81 not 260.

Also the TD is better for the diesel SLX for the petrol.

If you want to be fussy, but there more or less the same.

Not sure if this helps, only going on what I have been told.

I am about to do the same and supply my own oil for service on a 335d. I went to purchase the SLX and was told that Castrol have stopped making it and Edge is their replacement. (Both 0w-30, both for Diesel, both recommended for BMW, both fully synthetic)

Incidently, where did you get the oil from? I am being quoted the same price (£85 ish) for oil service if i supply the oil (£230ish) if not. The oil cost me £90 - not a great deal in it, but worth the saving, I guess.

Got a friend of a friend who works for Halfords - £80 for 8 litres (plus two free screwdriver/torx sets as they're on special at the moment).

You're still saving £55 (which you already know!)if you purchase the oil yourself, so worth def worth doing it. Plus you may get some spare tools!

Yes, indeed, worth the saving. Unfortuantely I purchased the oil last weekend from Halfords and it wasnt on deal so £45 / 4l and no free screwdriver! - Nevermind, will be intresting to see what BMW say when I take it in on Tuesday.

Which dealer do you use? Copper Cobham?

Official update:

My mate works for a big oil manufacturer testing oils at various temperatures.

He made some enquiries and replied 'they are both the same oil. SLX longlife 04 is what is supplied to the dealerships, and is what they are told to use. Edge TD is what is sold retail. same stuff.'

So, not better, but no worse.

Sounds like a load of ol cobblers to me.

Ive just done the same, i took in 8 litres of castrol edge td 0w30 and no qestions asked, and i have 2.5 litres left for top ups.

As long as it has ll04 on the oil can they cant refuse it. I think they forgot about your oil, put their own in then realised, and wanted yours as a replacement.

Casstrol Edge TD vs SLX update

Though I'd pose the question to BMW, in response:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for contacting BMW Customer Information.

We recommend Castrol oils for our vehicle range, as this is the brand we use at factory production and is tried and tested in our product range.

For your 335d, we recommend Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel, 0W-30.

Please do contact me should you have any further questions.

Yours sincerely

So, if you're supplying your own oil for a 335d, make sure it's Castrol Edge TD 0W-30 and make sure the dealer doesn't substitute it for something else. I feel a strong letter coming on.

And the dealer forgot to stamp my service book.

Your oil cap has Castrol stamped on it, the Castrol website recommends Edge TD 0W-30, as do BMW.

I'd stick with Castrol!

I bought 3 x 4L of the Edge oil for my first service, and I got 3 screwdriver sets They are good.

Mine will go in for an oil change at 10,000 miles - ODC still says 20,000 to go and I have done nearly 4,000 now.

Does it stipulate for which model/engile? Is it LL01 or LL04?
