Airport Express/Airplay in car! - success
Finally after years of thinking about doing this, I actually did it.
I've always wanted to stream music wirelessly in my cars, I hate aux cables and bluetooth is lossy and a battery drain; I set out to install an Apple Airport express so that I can play music via Airplay - if you've ever used Apple's Airplay technology then you know how BOSS it is. Ultimately what you do is alter the Airport's power source by removing the standard AC power supply and replacing it with a USB cable and small voltage convertor (found on ebay)...so now you draw power from the USB and AUX cable plugs into the Airport express and then its all concealed in the center console! After installing I had no issues whatsoever, the sound quality is brilliant!! If anyone wants this done PM me and we can arrange something. Will post pics soon.. heres a quickvid I posted on IG Last edited by shwinturbo; 11-12-2013 at 09:19 AM.. |

Good job. I have a similar set up. Are you getting any dropouts with your iPhone?

I use a blackberry stereo gateway at the moment which is OK but sometimes has connection problems. When it's working it's OK.
Why is this solution better than streaming via bluetooth A2DP?? Also for the power supply wouldn't something like this work? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ring-Automot...sxp_grid_i_0_2 Not keen on any electrical or soldering work! Thanks! |

Th reason for using the AE is quality of signal. The AE can pass through a little higher than CD quality music. The BT streamers are all limited by the bandwith of BT, which produces a much lower quality signal.

As for the power supply, yes you could have just used a clunky ac adaptor but that setup was not for me. I'm happy that i am able to cleanly tuck away the AE in my center console with minimal wiring... i took a road trip the other day and when my friends wanted to play their own music it was such a seamless process |

My question is if you have your iPhone set to the airport, won't it also try grab Internet off of it as well? Therefor you wouldn't be able to stream music because it's try to go over the airport instead of you iPhones cellular? If not I def know what to do with my extra airport express.

Yea this has been talked about quite a bit. There are some steps in the setup of the airport that you need to do so the cell phone still uses the internet normally, and not your car wifi which obviously doesn't have internet.

Very interesting! I like that quite a bit! If I was more of an Apple guy, I would probably be considering your solution quite a bit.
That being said, I've been very happy with my $30 usb 2.0/120 GB hard drive combo, syncing files with DoubleTwist. However, since the price of flash memory has dropped, I will be upgrading to a 128 GB USB 3.0 flash drive during Black Friday/Cyber Monday. |

i have just now gotten around to this idea thanks to the attention of you and kaigoss' thread. thank you guys. lossless file transmission is such a revelation. I just ordered a airport express myself. I would like to mention theres other options as far as digital optical audio out from the airport express goes. The easiest would be dacs with 5V requirements. You would only need a usb cable routed to a 12v-5v adapter, hardwired or plug in. One example is the very small 5V Audioengine D1 DAC at $169 which is easily hidden along with the airport express. great choice. I Had a musical fidelity V DAC layin around which is 12V but ill need a DC DC regulated converter. This cant really be hidden in the center console.
One other accessory that may be of value is a Audioquest stereo RCA to 3.5mm hard adapter piece rather than a cable to allow you to use RCA's from the AE or external dac to the aux input Its 10 bucks on amazon. I will be using a samsung galaxy phone and am wondering if i can use a 128 gb usb flash drive into the phone for more music file space besides the 65gb micro sd. |
