My car as about 110k N55.

So today driving to Toronto the car started losing power. So I stopped turn off the engine for 3 mins the drove again then after 30 mins or so it gave the message again. I turn the car off for 1 min then drove and it didn't show again. Mind you I arrived at my destination. (Waterloo to Toronto).
Coming back to Waterloo from Toronto, I had to stop twice, I actually stopped 3 times, the second time was at a the Service Centre tired to be proactive, stopped for few mins then drove, but few mins later warning came! So it didn't really help. It seems I just need to turn off and on the car then it good to go again.

Just wondering if this is the temperature sensor or the water pump?

I also noticed sometimes in the past 2 weeks when I shift from 2nd to 3rd the care "chokes" a bit. It doesnt happen all the time though.

what message were you getting? .. have you check your coolant level to see if you are losing coolant. If you are getting the overheat message you probably shouldnt be driving the car as you can do damage your engine ..

I got the Engine Temperature is High and the later the Engine Overheated.

But seeing the temperature gauge it never went pass 120, which is the middle.

That temp gauge is for the oil if I'm not mistaken

You can use the "hidden menu" to navigate to the coolant temp and monitor that

Alright I just checked the coolant and its freaking empty or very minimal?!

I thought there was supposed to be a sensor or a message that tells us that the coolant is minimal or empty?

How do I go about the hidden menu? Pressing and hold the ODO button for 10 sec?

Check your ground wire near the driver side motor mount. My ground wire was so corroded and it caused my water pump not to turn on and also my car not to start.

Cheap fix if it is that.

110k km is a long drive in an original WP. It's likely that it needs replacing and the thermostat too.

As for Coolant, our engines burn it so you'll need to top up every year.

Your waterpump and thermostat will probably need replacing.

Same think happened to me, 2011 335xi with about 70k on it. Turned out to be the waterpump however thermostat was still fine.

You continually drove with a bad waterpump and let it overheat multiple times? I know the N series engines are stout, but thats a receipe for warped heads on many other engines.

If the car overheats, most of the time it is due to driving hard/long while having zero coolant.
Do a pressure test on your coolant reservoir to troubleshoot the location of the leak. If found a small leak in the expansion tank and costed $85 to replace (was going through a bottle of coolant every 2 weeks).

My recommendation is don't replace it until it needs it, my one car has 136,000kms on original, and my other has 80,000 on original. Even if I replaced it, the water pump could go anytime... I've replaced buddies with 70,000 and others with 140,000...seems like a roll of the dice.

If your coolant is low, top it up and check for leaks. Avoid driving with low coolant level as this makes your water pump work extra hard and will kill an old pump.
