Picking up new car from factory?
Does anyone have any info about how easy it is to arrange to pick up a new car from Welt?
I have seen threads from people before about having done that, but it seems the dealership thinks its not so straight forward to do... |

I'm not sure completely, but I thought I read it somewhere I know the yanks come over to collect cars but they take them back to the factory to be shipped to the US.
I hope it is available because I would love to do it! Didn't someone on here ask BMW ages ago and they were told its not an option? Perhaps give Anneka a PM. |

I am pretty sure the yanks just drive them through Europe - once they get on the boat they then get delivered as normal I think?
I think the car has to be registered and taxed in germany and then you have to re-register it and re-tax it again in the Uk Palmnuts will know more about those details, he collected his Merc from the factory |

I discussed this at Park Lane when I ordered my car 2 years ago. I had picked my first 2 cars from the factory back in the 80s so was keen to do it again.
The apparent problem is that to get the 3 year UK dealer warranty (vice the EU 2 year) and be shown as a genuine UK car vice a grey import it must go through the BMW UK process at Thorn which puts it on the official database. Since Park Lane do all the Diplomatic sales (so any regional variations such as North America or Middle East) they could have arranged a factory pick up but it wouldn't have been an official UK spec car which was a showstopper in my view. Regular UK dealers probably don't have any visibility of factory collection. PL said it was being considered again but I guess nothing has changed.

So how can mercedes do factory collection and still offer 3 year warranty, sounds like an excuse because they can't be bothered.

Even the Americans can pickup BMW's from Welt without any warranty issues, there's no excuse.

Well I cant find anyone in the UK who has done this, all the info on the net points solely to the American 'European Delivery' scheme.
However I am hopeful my dealer will be able to get this sorted! |

Well I have been told (unsurprisingly?) that this cannot be done.
I offered to pick the car up and drive to where ever in the UK for the PDI etc to be done and drop it to the dealer, but they wouldn't even ask BMW HQ if that was an option...... |

I know it sounds like a nice idea, but practically, get it delivered run it in first.
Then go for a factory tour and hit the autobahns without knackering your brand new motor. |

This is something that BMW are way behind on compared to Mercedes and it's a shame as the factory collect option is a great experience. Mercedes actually promote it when you buy a car and their set up in Stuttgart is great to visit and very efficiently run.
When I picked up my C63 I got the car on temporary German plates, they insured it for me, provided flights, food, hotel and channel crossing back - all FREE. All I paid for was fuel after the first free tank ran out and of course the car had a few hundred miles on it. When I got back to the UK I took it to the supplying dealer who PDI'd and registered it. Until the car is registered in the UK it's not YOUR car - when picking it up from Stuttgart I basically signed to say I was delivering it to the dealer (i.e. I was their delivery driver!). Hence the car is registered to Mercedes in Germany and insured by them. This did cause some interesting questions when I got to customs at Dover who didn't really 'get it'...and particularly wanted to know how I was paying for the car! I guess none of this is relevant here as BMW are shit when it comes to these nice little value-adds to the ownership experience. The fact that BMW UK won't even consider it just shows that they don't care - take your money and that's that. (Note...this was one of the few good things about Mercedes UK and their dealer network!) |
