Service warning.

Morning all, got in my car this morning, 2006 330d with just over 110k miles. Got in it and started her up and a service message came up. Went into the service info (non idrive) and the only thing that show as now is what looks to be the dpf?

Does this mean the dpf needs replacing or needs a forced regeneration? Or some thing totally different? I have no lights on the dash if that makes a difference.

Nice one mate, thought it as dpf. What's the second picture?

Second picture is DPF and will show as you have done 110k miles. Thats what the BMW deems the life of the DPF....

Thanks, so do I need to start thinking of replacing or removing? Or will another light come on the dash when it needs changing?

It should be fine it its not giving you any trouble. You can probably get the service light reset.

Not strictly true. The first light is indeed the pollen filter or 'microfilter' as it's called. You've got 2400 miles or the end of the month to replace it. Just buy it off bmwpartsonline for about £20 and swap it yourself.

The second light is indeed your DPF but it's showing as having 110k miles life left in it, not that it needs replaced! Which is actually surprising as I thought the max was 80k on the OBC - mines been at 80k for the past 20k miles!

Thanks mate, will get the micro filter and replace my self then. How do I go about making the notice stop come up on the dash every time I start it once I've done it?

That's strange as the car has full service history and has nothing on there about the dpf being changed? And surely there is no way of the dpf lasting 220k miles?

Here's how to reset the lights. Careful you don't do the wrong ones though as you'll end up giving yourself an extra 30000 miles on your brakes or something - which isn't good!

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=384430

As for the DPF - not really sure how it works - it's not purely mileage based. I'd imagine that as long as it's regenerating often enough and your engine isn't smoking too much then there isn't really any reason you would need it changed. Not really sure where the life = 110k comes from?!

Rule of thumb - when the computer shows something in red, it's overdue. Yellow - it's due soon - check the date or mileage. Orange - it's fine for now but will show you the mileage to go and date where appropriate.

how does the car's CBS "knows" when to change pollen/cabin filter? cause the last time i changed it i did it by myself without having a service light regarding it.
what i ask is if someone knows if the cbs calculates the mileage/time through the last reset of the big service or there is a dedicated sensor for the pollen filter that is able to read if its worn or not? (i bet is based on mileage or time since the last change).
many thanks
terry

No sensor, its done on time and distance though if your changing items through servicing your car yourself, you should be updating the service lights.

thanks scott. i always reset my service lights properly.
the strange thing is (and that is why i did my question in my previous post) that i have never seen a dedicated service indicator light for the replacement of the pollen-cabin filter in my CBS..
maybe has something to do with the model year of my car
or maybe it is "included" in the general service light indicator where the car is lifted, as shown in the 2nd picture of the attached photo. in this photo again there is a dedicated service light for the pollen filter and the spark plugs (petrol engine) which again i haven't seen a dedicated light showing me the remaining mileage for their replacement. or you have it on only when there is a replacement need?
thanks again and sorry if i make you bored-tired with my questions

ps: photo is not mine!

Some e9x have a lamp for micro filter and some don't.Usually was earlier models that did.As a rule the micro filter is generally changed at every 2nd oil

well i would bet that later models should have a dedicated lamp not earlier. thanks for the info.
every 2nd oil change means every 2 years which is what i did but the pollen filter had been always good as new. i found out that bmw recommends pollen replacement every 3 years so i decided this time to wait a while (last time i changed it in 5/2011, i had an optical check during easter and it was still new). sure, more dirt will come if one drives more often than me or in a more polluted environment.
thanks again

It is flagged as a recommended operation on the key reader at about 2 years but as you say they're always pretty clean when they come out also on earlier models it has the lamp for it ,BMW simplified the CBS data on later models omitting the air filter, spark plug, and micro filter warnings.

As above, they simplified it. Basically, the microfilter used to be on its own schedule but that made for a lot of unecessary service visits. So they changed it so that it's now changed at every second oil service or something on those lines.
