This happened to my friend a few weeks ago, if you have the warranty, they will come to you and fix it. If that doesn't work then there's problems.

I had this with a new E92. It needed a new steering column. Luckily it was under warranty

It needs the warranty people to come out and reset the error. (as ibz mentioned)
And ultimate solution is replacing the steering column as CC mentioned.

When I was on the phone to the tech. He suggested I put the fob in the slot and hit either side of the steering wheel hard with the palms of my hand, which freed it off and got me to work, where he came out and said it needed replacing

Mine came on recently due to a low battery... THey cleared the code and all is well. But that is only if your steering lock hasnt actually locked up

Red sign= you cannot turn on the car. You can follow what CC said, but it rarely works.

Well, the Indy's came this morning and plugged a tablet into the OBD port. Right enough, it wouldnt start however they forced it to. The ignition just refuses to show up and get to the 2nd stage. He started it though, and thinks it should be a software update on the CAS, and resetting the ELV counter.
I will update later when i get the news... |

Sam, i had the red sign!!! But my steering was fine, i could start the car and drive around like normal. I did so for about a month. But i recently had it cleared at BMW... they said there were no issues, but a low battery can cause this from time to time.

bit strange bud and you have been lucky if it allowed you to drive. If you have warranty, get it replaced under the warranty as the issue returns usually and at some point the steering lock does not unlock.

These guys at BMW Parklane are really gd and they are sorting out a number of oil leaks for me, but they honestly said there are no problems with the steering column as there were no errors what so ever apart from the red lock coming on due to a low battery warning... |

Right... update. Its had a software update on the CAS, ELV cleared and the car is super duper!. MOT time due in 4 weeks....
edit.. passed MOT with no advisories! With the update, I have a job report on this... completed by BMDynamix in Wigan. My car is up for sale, so this is something that will go alongside the history with the car .. nothing to hide lol.. Practically most E90's/ E60's at some point may suffer the steering lock failure, normally early on in their life, then rectified under warranty at BMW with the "update" on the CAS. My car slipped throught the warranty net like many others because the fault happened later. It's been issue free for the last 4 months now. Last edited by waftingtony; 02-10-2014 at 06:18 AM.. |
