Service costs
Someone told me that's it works out a lot more cost efficient to purchase your own serviceable parts from the Internet eg oil filter, disk pads etc. Does anyone else do this and if so what is the best site to purchase from.

I'm not sure about shipping internationally but it seems like a lot of folks on the forums get their parts from getbmwparts.com.

ive bought from getbmwparts.com and rmreuropean. Getbmwparts doesnt ship outside the us so i had it shipped to the border and crossed into the us to pick it up.
Same for rmr, but for those guys i used a middle man service shipito.com to accept the package and reship it to me. Between both orders i probably saved about 600$ |

Once you're out of warranty, it's always cheaper to do it yourself than pay for labor. It's not always easy, but there is a DIY for most tasks.

I have just had a major service done on my 2009 E91 LCI yesterday and was present through out the service to see every detail and it was not difficult at all. I could have done it my self. Changing engine oil and filter and changing micro filter can be done by almost any one. The biggest hurdle is getting the car up on some sort of lift or ramp or jack stands to reach under the car for oil change. I would also buy a torque wrench and filter cap wrench, both cost under 40 us dollar total, since I am not used to the force that should be applied while tightening the sump plug and the filter. The BMW mechanic used ordinary wrench, no torque.

you could just go to the hardware store, pick up some 2x4 and some wood screws and make yourself a little ramp. I've built one myself and just had to make sure the angle was low enough to give clearance. The first time I used it, I propped the car up on it overnight to make sure it was sturdy and asked the Home Depot guy how sturdy the wood would be. (Note: the rear tires would still have contact with the ground so its really only holding about 50% of the car's weight)

I've found good prices at FCPEuro. bought my brake pads, sensors, and rotors from there.
Just as FYI...I don't know if this is what you were trying to do but some dealers don't install your own parts. They claim they can't warranty the work if they use parts they didn't source themselves. Legal issues and what not. An Indy shop might though. |

Had the oil/filter changed today by my dealer. With a coupon, the bill (including a swirl free hand wash) was
Parts: $60.00 Labor: 19.95 Tax: 3.60 Total: $83.55 At those prices, DIY just doesn't make sense for me. Tom |
