I would say bilstein sport shocks and HR sport springs, both for xi. You ensure that the shocks won't wear out prematurely because they're made for use with lowering springs. The set-up won't be configurable like a coilover system but if that doesn't matter to you, the shock/spring package would likely be your best bet because it'll cost about $500 less than coils

It all depends on what you want to drop it for. Are you gonna AutoX it, are you looking for better handling on the street, are you just looking for better stance? These are all questions you need to know the answer to before dropping a car. I am just interested in appearance therefore I am doing springs and springs alone. A lot of people on here frown on it because they say it will ruin your shocks, tell me guys who has blown the last set on here due to springs? I have dropped almost everyone one of my cars and never blown shocks because of it, call it luck, but I am just trying to look good, while other guys need to perform better, they would typically go with the coilovers which give you a far advanced system allowing you to adjust them to fit your needs.
Hope this helps

Check the link in my sig for all the xi parts.
Springs lower it, while hurting the stock shocks over time. Bilsteins shocks and new springs are the next cheapest and better then just springs alone. Coilovers are expensive but the best. Thats your only three choices. new springs with stock shocks bilstein shocks and eibach springs coilovers

There are many threads comparing the two. Both wear out your struts a bit faster. Both are relatively cheap and easy to get.

Personally I would go with shock + springs combo, I had bad experience with stock shock + lowering springs before and will not do it again. However, I did ride in my friend's E92 with H&R sports with stock shock and I have to say it's not all that bad. It's up to you man, do your suspension right the first time around.
Ummm, people buy xi for the AWD feature.... especially for those who live in areas that snow a whole lot. However at the same time you can get the stance you want, I don't see why not...

Yup, like me. I wanted the handling, stability, traction, launch and winter driving abilities of the awd. Slap on some springs or coils and you've got the better ride height as well.

pulleze...as the owner of a full size truck, an MDX and a 335xi, the xi is barely higher than an i, and hardly has an "SUV like profile". If you live in snow country, the main reason for the xi, you'll know why that bit of extra height helps. If someone bought the xi thinking it was as good as the Subaru system for performance, well, they fail.
