Post Interbrand: BMW 15th Best Global Brand (Out of Top 100)

The Best Global Brands is an annual study conducted by Interbrand which ranks the value of the world's top brands, based on an assessment of its value in US Dollars. BMW is listed at the 15th position this year.

Some other studies have listed BMW as the most valuable auto manufacturer brand, but this one has Toyota and Mercedes Benz listed ahead of BMW, showing that these value studies are more art than science.

The study values BMW at $22.3 billion dollars. Toyota was valued at $26.2 billion and Mercedes is valued at $25.2 billion. Of the other auto manufacturers, Honda comes in next at #20, Ford at #50, VW at #53, Audi at #63, Hyundai at #65, Porsche at #72, and Ferrari at #91.

Here is the study's full results:

No way Benz is ahead of BMW. Mind you only 2 spots. How do they come up with this totally subjective list. Retarded!

Its not the cars, its the brand!!! We might not see it here in the states, but the ferrari brand has more of a following then possibly any other car company in the world. If you've ever been to Europe, other then in Germany, every street vender sells the local soccer teams jersey and ferrari gear.

Furthermore these rankings are a complete crock. I hate all things apple but I have to admit that it is one hell of a company. Despite the horrific economy, Apple stock keeps going up and these losers only voted it 17!!!!

Our Best Global Brands list is far from random.

There are several criteria considered when valuing the brands for our Best Global Brands rankings.

The brand is truly global and has successfully transcended geographic and cultural differences. It has expanded across the established economic centers of the world and is entering the major markets of the future. In measurable terms, this requires that:

At least 30 percent of revenues must come from outside the home country, and no more than 50 percent of revenues should come from any one continent.

It must have a presence on at least three major continents, and must have broad geographic coverage in growing and emerging markets.

There must be substantial, publicly available data on the brand’s financial performance.

Economic profit must be positive, showing a return above the operating and financing costs.

The brand must have a public profile and awareness above and beyond its own marketplace.

To find out more about Interbrand's methodology, look online at:

www.bestglobalbrands.com

Thanks!

Regards,
Alex

I guess that explains why Porsche is so far down the list...they were doing very well for a small company for a while until they tried to take over Audi/Volkswagen, and then the economy crashed...suddenly the tables got turned and Audi/Volkswagen ended up acquiring them.

I was suprised to see Apple as low as they are. I would have thought they would be in the top 5.

Nokia is a bit of surprise as well. Several years ago? Yes, absolutely. They don't seem to be as big a player in the age of the smartphone.

There are a few companies on the list I've never heard of.

I remember seeing this in my international Marketing class. An older version that is.

Nice find by the way.

Nokia has more phones worldwide than anybody else, more than blackberry, iphones and android.

Are you rating the brand or your liking of a product? DS has sold over 130 million and Wii has far outsold PS3 and xbox 360 and is Nintendo's most successful home console ever. 3DS is likely to be a smashing success (even if it may possibly not be the runaway success the DS has been). Mario Kart Wii has sold more than any other console game ever made that was not made by Nintendo. So on what basis should Nintendo not be on the list? Just because you don't like the Wii?

Wow, I found it quite surprising to find BMW so up and close to Toyota and Mercedes!
BMW is "just" a passenger car maker! Mercedes and Toyota build lots of other vehicles, from trucks to comercial ones. And Toyota has lots of small passengers cars, which must account for a huge sales volume.
How can a company that "just" builds sporty/luxury and fairly expensive cars be so high on this list is quite a feat IMO.

Keep in mind that these are global brands. Just because a certain brand may be popular among one's group of enthusiast car friends, doesn't mean that it has the same retention power among the average Global Joe.

It's very interesting to note that nearly 20 percent of these companies use Helvetica for their logos

I responsed to this earlier, but for some reason my response was deleted

I never said I don't like Wii, in fact I said I actually do like it. But Nintendo does not seem to be such a hit these days, its not something that everyone talks about. thats all
