Mine failed randomly back in December as I was driving home, around 44k miles I believe.

Fortunately the car is still under warranty until 5/12

So I am the latest to have to get this replaced. New Century BMW of Alhambra wants to charge me $1270.00, independent mechanic wants, $890.00. Both prices include labor.

Has there been a recall on this part? Seems like every N54 has to have this part replaced. By the way my warranty expired in March and I have 44k miles on the car. SMH.

Today I had to take my old mans 335i with 63k miles to the dealer to inspect the water pump as the fan turns on almost immediately after a cold start. I plugged in my Cobb AP and read a few codes regarding the water pump. The dealership took it in and told me if its the water pump, it will be covered by CPO.

I recently had the same issue, last month i had my water pump replaced for $1080, luckily my third party warranty covered it. But it's been less than a month and all of a sudden I get 2e81 and 2e84 code. I couldn't drive my car, luckily i was close to a gas station to pull in. I noticed when my car was being towed that it was leaking fluid, when the car was on the flatbed it looked like the area of the leak was near the water pump. So i can't tell if it was the reservoir or water pump that was actually leaking.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm having my turbos replaced soon, because of this thread I think i'm going to have him replace the waterpump while he's at it just to be safe since he's going to be in there anyways.

has anyone had the 2ef7 codes? i just saw a minor coolant spot on my driveway and when i pulled codes i had a 2ef7?

is this a precurser to the dreaded failing water pump?

recently had mine replaced because of a cracked water pump housing. I would get frequent low coolant warnings, eventually a full fill would leak out in a day. Went to the dealership repeatedly because of it. Pressure tests did not indicate a leak, it was not until the tech did a visual inspection of the housing that they fixed it, no codes.

Add me to the list guys. 2008 335i vert. Same thing happened out of no where fan working on high in an abnormal way, 5 kms later, yellow warning followed by red another 5 km after. Computer told to drive moderately to cool engine down, did that and then when red warning came up, i pulled over to turn to engine off for safety and called a tow truck. Got it towed to my house an hour ago. Tomorrow is going to be a costly day. Temperature was running below normal and car went into limp mode which was weird for me but i guess its normal to keep engine safe. Definitely wstermpump, thermostat or including a leak from coolant. I checked coolant level after cool off period but no decrease, it was upto level. Mileage 46000 miles. First oil gasket needed replacing last month after I saw a leak from the oil houing which was a cheap fix. This is the second issue I have faced in 2 years of ownership. Had to add this, the heater when working normally wouldn't blow hot air like its supposed to be, more like coldish air and this was evident in the last couple of weeks until today it actually gave both the hot engine temperature warnings. When it was getting towed tonight, I realised the right exhaust tip has a little excessive black mark on the exhaust tip. Why would the exhaust leave this sort of excessive black mark? Also when i was checking underneath bonnet, Slight water was dripping right underneath from the coolant tap when it was cooling down. Could there be a leak? My specialist said a month ago that the waterpump was on it's way out and that I should replace it before summer kicks in, which is a must now that this unluckiness has happened and I'm guessing thermostat is gone too. I'm thinking of doing a ecu reset, which I believe I did two days ago but maybe it's better to not touch it until the mechanic has a look at it tomorrow. Don't know if ecu reset will help me to drive the car to specialist which is 30 kms away. Probably shouldn't touch it and just get it towed there tomorrow.

Just had mine replaced @ 72,400 miles. Everything was fine, car took off from the light normally and at about 25 mph once i had crossed the intersection, yellow coolant light....10 seconds later, red coolant light and limp mode. cooled her off for 45 mins (in 40 degree weather) and drove quickly the rest of the 3/4ths of a mile into my subdivision. had the car towed to an indy shop, and $1073 later i had a new water pump and thermostat installed. car runs better than ever now and oil temps used to hover around 240 normally. They now hover around 220-225. i suspect my thermostat was bad all along, and now finally the water pump failed.

my waterpump and thermostat got replaced today and car runs beautifully now. Better than before. i was running 13.0 litres per 100 km in the last week which i found odd and my heater was switching from hot to warm back to hot and so forth occasionally :S Signs of thermostat and waterpump failure. Two days after I got stuck on the road, I picked the car up today from my bm specialist with all new parts and a full diagnosis, and I am now proudly running 9.0 L per 100kmh in the city and engine oil temperature stays at 110 degrees constant if i drive moderately like i did today. I only faced this weird problem for a week and I was getting worried about what could be wrong with the car, until the fan started blasting and I found out it was the waterpump. Heater is back to normal too and is running superb without any odd changes in temperature. Time to wash her tomorrow morning and enjoy the twin turbo rush all again. By the way I purchased my waterpump and thermostat for $700 and paid $250 for labour which included coolant flush and three aluminium bolts. All up costed me $950. New waterpump and thermostat from dealer was going to cost me $1280 excluding two hours of labour, aluminium bolts which would've costed another $500! Basically got it done for less than half price with the help of a friend who sells cheaper oem parts. Boooyaa! My advice is never go to the dealer for repairs unless it's the last choice and if this happens to anybody else, make sure you choose the waterpump with the latest serial because a new version with a different serial has been released through BMW.

Add me to the list, car is just under 90,000 km so the timing is almost in perfect sync with everyone else.

My 08 335 threw a 2e81 and 2e82 yesterday. Events went down in this order:
Cold night and heater blowing COLD air.
Yellow warning.
Limp mode.
Red warning.
Drove last mile home 100 yards at a time.
Is it possible it's NOT a water pump and just thermostat?

Sure, but why risk paying labor twice? I would suggest replacing both. Revised water pump is much more reliable.

So what MY did the pumps get revised? Seems to be mostly 07-08s reporting failures but that could just be a function of more time/miles. Any higher mileage 09-10s had water pump/t-stat fail?

2007 335i with 62k miles, same thing. Just bought all the OEM parts (Pump, Stat, Bolts) for $470. Hoping to tackle this next week on my day off...

Same symptoms as everyone else said. Driving completely normal (good thing too because another 335i was behind me trying to race me, glad I decided not to pursue that!), as I pulled into work, yellow coolant light, about 15 seconds later as I pull into my parking spot (literally), the red light comes on and fans all kick in at full speed.

Mine went today, yellow coolant light, I was close to a dealership so I stopped and had it checked out. Pump went on the way into the bay. I was out of state so I had to get a rental to drive home... Have to go back early next week to pick up the car. Guess it could have been worse. Im still under warranty. N54 w/ 80k mi.
