More bad news
Only this week we heard BMW are to introduce diesels to the M series. Now they intend to dilute the M Power range even more with a sub range

The M range is already fairly diluted. The X5M and X6M are hardly true to the M-Division values. Then there's the addition of the 1M and soon M4(maybe).
Adding a diesel in is just the next step. The M cars have been getting bigger and heavier every generation. Sat nav and all the other toys hardly make for an engaging driving experience either. |

I think the M550d is part of this sub range, not a true M
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=634571 Bit like the S range from Audi?

I liked it when there were M cars and then the top of the pops of the standard range with Mtec kits (E30 325i Sport and E36 328i Sport).
I know a lot of people will disagree but M Sport and weedy engines should never be available in one package. |

Even though I owned a weedy engined M Sport I have to say I agree.
BMW haven't made a very good job of tiering their models with regard to ///M association. Mercedes also fail at this which is why I think certain less knowledgeable owners feel that it's ok to stick an ///M or in the case of Mercedes an AMG or even Brabus badge on the back of their weedy engined motors simply because they are the sport model. Despite their flaws somehow Audi have managed it, it's rare to see an RS badge on anything that isn't and S and S Line have their own identity. |

You what?! Audi are the worst of the lot! All their cars look exactly the same whether it is an SE, S-Line or S car, the RS is the only one that looks slightly different, but even then you can buy RS wheels for your s-line when ordering. At the end of the day they should call them sports if it is not an M car. I personally want it to look nice, so wouldn't buy an SE in some models, but couldn't give two shits whether it was called a Sport or an M-Sport. |

You've missed the point or I probably didn't make it very well.
I wasn't talking so much about the look of the cars but more the separation or creation of sub brands to avoid devaluation of the premium heritage brand which in turn confuses the non enthusiast buyer. The use of the exact same brand for an M car and an M sport is what results in people sticking an M sport badge on their 318d M Sport because "it's an M car after all". We only have to look at the clownage thread to see how this devalues the M brand. It won't put anyone off buying an M car but you can't argue that it devalues the M badge. Audi don't experience this problem because they have clear sub brands that even a monkey (yeah, yeah, most Audi drivers) could differentiate between. Joe public who wants to cover his A4 S line in badges is more likely to buy a job lot of S line badges off ebay than he is RS4 badges because "it's an S Line after all". The cars on the other hand are like you say almost identical to one another and as for the wheels..... lazy bastards. |

Selling tarted up modestly powered models as M this or that generates confusion. there seems to be a significant number of owners who think that because thier car is an M Sport it is somehow fundamaentally different to the SE and ES models. Really it could be seen as a marketting triumph that BMW have somehow managed to confuse a proportion of thier customers into thinking that the extra wedge they splashed on 'an M-Sport' bought them anything more than a bodykit perhaps some stiffer suspension and a load of badges. |

At the end of the day BMW don't give a shit and it all comes down to money. Why not put M-Sport kit on a small engined car if you can charge a few more grand for it? Can't say I like it but I'd do it if I were in their shoes.
