Makes sense when you are talking about a well lubricated ring!

Turbos
Quote:
This turbo set up fitted to the new hitech N54 i expect that 450kw would be fine. The idea of a big single and turbo lag is not for me. I have driven to many lag monsters over the years big power but a nugget on the street. But there are so many other issues with the N54 engine cooling being the problem, oil, water, air, then there is the clutch, brakes, drive line etc there is no point to break the car we have a lot of R&D to do. So that the big twin set up will be some time away 6-12 months As far as the engine goes what can i say it is just a fantastic engine, i have no idea how far to take it in stock form we have 350kw now, in the US they say 450kw+. I dont want to break an engine so i will go carefully |

I love that you are doing this testing/R&D lol, I can see the 335i being the next cult car as they become more affordable over the next few years. I would love to see the max potential of a stock, bolt on setup style car. Also I hope you keep it street usable, not a laggy setup. |

that power figure is 350 rwkW. Unless you are full bolt on and running RB turbos with Methanol injection, you will be at least a few kW's shy of that number. Whilst Pete claims 6-12 months on a Garrett GT2860R-5 twin turbo conversion, I personally would like it to be 6 months at the most. However he is treading carefully and rightfully so, as rebuilding a N54 would be a very expensive exercise. FYI, based on my calculations Shiv has made the equivalent of approximately 420 rwkW on the Advan dyno, with his "Big Single" setup. Whilst I have no interest in a single turbo conversion, it does illustrate how stout the stock internals of the N54 engine truly are. I suspect within the next 3-6 months we will know how robust the stock bottom end really is and how far it can be pushed, "before it ejects a rod out the side of the block", (young Chris). Whilst Pete feels confident that Garret -5's would make 450 rwkW on my car, I would be ecstatic if the stock motor could reliably support 400-425 kilowatts at the wheels. It is already very impressive in a straight line, when rocking Map 4 on the Procede. With another 50-75 rwkW it would a be streetable 10 second ET rocket ship. Cheers, JD.
