Training HomeLink without a remote

Hi everyone,

My new home (woo! first time homebuyer!) has a 2 car garage with opener. But it was bank owned and so I have no remotes.

Is there a way for me to train my homelink without the remote? Or do I have to buy a replacement just to train my car?

I lost my remote and accidentally reprogrammed the opener (killing all the codes in my car) trying to reprogram a new opener. After going through several different remotes because I have an older garage door opener, I found the Clicker universal to be the best option:

I mention this one because it really does work with everything. I wouldn't want anyone to go through the headache I went through.

Yes, you will need a remote for HomeLink to copy the code from.

Pfft. Check to see if your garage door opener has a "Learn" button. Mine does - you press the Learn button on the garage door opener, then hold the homelink button you want to open the door until the light blinks a few times. Then it should work.

Your mileage may differ.

You have to let the homelink in your car know it's going to control a garage door first. You need an actual remote to do that.

Unless the opener is some whackjob no-name deal or more than 25 years old you can just buy a replacement remote. I recently picked up replacement for my two openers (one ~2002, one ~1998) for about $20 apiece.

Find a manual for your opener online (Google the brand and model) and it'll list the part numbers of compatible accessories, at least one of which will be a remote. Google that part number for sources.

In my remote searching I noticed that lots of late-model openers use the same radio system. The (((o))) (or "Security+") stuff seems to be compatible across quite a few brands. Push learn, push remote, done. Pretty neat.

Nope. Bought it new. My Honda minivan was the same way, press learn, hold the homelink button till the light blinks on the opener.

My 07 335i won't learn using only the opener. I've tried 3 times.
Cleared the codes, pushed learn, held homelink, nothing happens...
