yeah, and you have to unfold both of them to measure the surface area. that's all.

the pleats are a different size and there are a different number.. stock has way, way more than that cone filter.

Interesting...so your claiming the Euro intake hurts performance?

The size of this cone and the one for the euro box are pretty similar, the euro box one is slightly larger but not by much.

I know he's wrong, but he won't accept it. He's making excuses about the subtle pleats in each filters (which the density would be deterimined by brand)

You don't know I'm wrong until its been measured.

I never said the euro box flowed worse. There's a reason air filters make basically no power difference, thats all.

it won't be on the manufacturers website, but you could estimate it by measuring the depth of the pleats and counting them. it's not a "subtle" difference either - there are far fewer pleats in a typical cone filter than a stock panel filter.

I happened to have changed my filter last Saturday. I just unfolded the stock paper filter - it's 23 feet long! about 9" wide (I can measure the taper later). I'd be really, really surprised if the typical aftermarket cone filter came to even half that area.

Cotton K&N filters flow much better than stock paper air filters and Im sure your right, K&N filters let a ton of dirt in your engine, that's why their so popular.....

I don't know about "much better". they do flow better - but you gain what, 2-4hp if you're lucky?

FWIW, I replaced the paper filter with a K&N in both our E90s, just because it's serviceable. When I hit the dyno I plan to test the K&N vs a new paper filter.

And it would still flow better and filter like shit. What's your point? First you argued if the Panel filter had more surface area than a Cone filter - it doesn't. Next you jump to the different filters of different materials from different manufactures. OK?

what? I don't know what you're going on about with the different materials.

those specs don't tell you surface area. you can't just measure the outside surface area of the filter..

I guarantee a typical cone filter dropped into an E90 has less surface area. It's a simple matter of pleat depth x the number of pleats, and there are 5x as many in the stock filter. I don't have an aftermarket one or I'd measure it.

I also never disputed that a cotton material was less restrictive. but surface area still matters. people just assume a fancy looking cone filter flows better, even when it's obviously covered in about 2 years of grime. or those awful mushroom filters.

Brand new K&N cone filters flow better than brand new stock drop in paper filters, I think we all know this....Lets move on

But does it flow better than stock size K&N filter? Because pleats or not pleats it looks to me like it has a bigger surface area than the cone would...
