When looking at purchasing your BMW or BMWs, what other vehicles were you considering? Also, what made you choose your BMW over those cars?

I was looking for a Mercedes C350 and was very close to buying one till I test drove the 335i. After that decision was made and drove the 335i out of the dealer the next day.

I was in the market for track/street dual duty under $30k (the cheaper the better).
986 Cayman - too expensive, IMSB/RMS failure preventative cost 996 C2/4 - IMSB/RMS, mushy shifter, bench seats GTO 6.0 - too soft, heavy MR2 Spyder - slow, gay Miata - slow, gay, too small S2k - too small, nonadjustable driving position E30 - overpriced, old, impossible to find nice one E36 M3 - needs suspension overhaul b/c too old, kinda slow C6 Z51 - Z51 package too rare, too expensive C5 Z06 - Loved it. Really came down to this and my current car. E46 M3 - current car. |

back when I bought my 01 330ci it was an 01 S4. The S4 was a grand or two more and I had to wait a few weeks for it so I went with the 330ci. My 08 335xi was a no brainer. but the only thing I regret is not getting the 6spd manual.

I had one as a loaner, it's a nice little truck, steering is completely numb (sadly many things are these days). I hauled something big in it when I had it. Cargo space is similar to my Cayenne, back seat is a little snug.

GT500.
Got the 4-door because we had a little one on the way and I didn't want to have to put the little guy in the back seat while being all contorted. When the little one can get into the backseat without my help, then I will get rid of the E90. I'm thinking I only have a couple more months to go. Got the E90 because I liked the ride but I thought it would be more dependable than the E36, E46 I had in the past. I have owned lots of vehicles in the last 25 years. The E90 is the least dependable of them all.

jan '01...
used acura nsx (no rear seats, not fast enough for an exotic, too expensive) new corvette c5 (just a thought, couldn't see myself as a corvette guy) new e46 m3 (too expensive, would have had to wait months and i needed a car) new lexus is300 (not bad, but it's no m3) this was actually the first dealership and m3 i looked at, and it was a winner. one of the last e36 m3s to come off the production line, only driven for a year (sat in the lot for a while). got a pretty good deal, bought it the next day. 12.5 years and 140k miles later, its been the best car i've owned (company cars included). overall it's been pretty reliable, had a lot of fun, lots of memories. we've been through the party/clubbing years, work and small biz, relationships/pets, grad school, a handful of homes/garages, etc. still runs well, not immaculate but pretty clean imo. for a few years i had this and a 996, and ended up parting with the 996. it's pretty much retired now, i don't drive much anymore and the es300 is a perfect food wagon. I was looking for E39 530's...but they were too old. Spent a little more for a newer car. Other than BMWs was like an A4 but they were a little bit more and heard their maintenance sucks.

Yes it is a little tight in the back not much bigger than my E90. I thought the Cayenne is a lot bigger and more comparable to the Q7s. I'm trying to convince her to get a slightly used Cayenne.

I got my 135i because I hated how big and numb the 335i felt. It remains my favorite car on the market. I got the S4 because I like the way they look and sound and I found the right one at the right time. We have a daughter on the way and need something we can put a baby seat in.

I looked at a bunch of BMW's and very seriously considered a Porsche Panamera GTS before I ordered the X6M. I couldn't make the deal on the Panny that I was happy with... ended up ordering the X6M next day and couldn't be happier, she's a keeper! My first ///M car.
BMW PCD - 6D-31 by ddk632, on Flickr Always loved Beemers after my 1993 E36 325i M/T sedan, this is my 4th BMW now, not including a BMW motorcycle. So it's not that something made me choose BMW over the other car, it was that the Panny GTS was the only non-BMW that stirred my emotions enough to consider a non-BMW this time around. |
