Don't you guys hate salt?

I kept my car garaged all week, check the weather report and 0% chance of precipitation. Head out for work yesterday morning, and it starts to snow. Get to work and the car is encrusted in salt. Nice! I wish I could work for the Weather Channel, or CNBC. Never have to be right about what you say.

But seriously, if you look closely, even the oil cooler is caked in salt, which cannot be good for the car....

Road Salt

I use Eastwood Road Salt Neutralizer and a garden sprayer. Spray the entire undercarriage and suspension with the solution, let it sit for a few minutes, then pressure wash it off. Makes a huge difference if you drive your car in the winter w/salt. Also, late in the fall, ususally as I'm swithching to my winter tires, I'll clean the undercarriage really well, let it dry and then apply Boeshield t-9 to all suspension components, steering knuckles, etc. If you get it on your brake discs, take it off with some brake cleaner. Seems to help with the corrosion.

Nice, thanks for the tip, I'm going to check this Eastwood stuff out....I'm not kidding, my car has seen snow maybe 8X? Yet it is all rusted underneath. Be very curious to see a AZ car that's the same 6 y.o. and compare....

p.s. makes me wonder--is washing a car with soap and water ineffective then, as that's what the salt neutralizer cos. claim.....

We have very mild winters here so very little brine gets put down. Even so - when I wash during and after the winter I run an oscillating sprinkler under the car to spray off the salt - move it around to make sure the entire undercarriage is washed.

I rinse the salt off the car, and the under carriage. I don't bother washing the car.

I take my car to the car wash once a week to try and keep that stuff off of it. They claim they have an under carriage spray that helps with the salt but I'm a little suspect of the claim. No rust so far though.
