Only the TV version that I saw has the guy in the yellow viper saying "I'm making up for the shortcomings in my life"

ehh, i think it's stupid. definitely doesn't even come close to the ones for the GTI.

they basically label people and say if you drive a passat you're cool and you're the shit who doesn't pretend to be something different. that's bullshit because i know many viper drivers who drive the car just out of pure enjoyment and love for the car.

in any case, they group people into categories, i don't like that. what about labeling them only Wagen instead of Volks-Wagen since it's not really people's car anymore as Passat now starts at whooping $23k.

I agree vlad. I felt kinda dirty after watching it for some reason. As soon as I saw it on TV, I knew I had to find it on the internet and post it here.

They say they it has the "lowest ego emmissions of any German-engineered sedan."

What does that mean? Anyone that drives a german car other than VW has an ego problem? Like you said, I don't like the labels either. Sure I guess there are people out there that buy expensive things just to make them feel better about themselves, but a commercial like this isn't fair.

What about modest people that just have a taste for expensive things? People often tell me getting a BMW was "excessive" but it was never about me trying to make myself look better, etc. I love the ride, handling, performance, and the quality of the car. I love to drive it--that's what it's about for me.

the most ironic thing is that by making this commercial, they're basically saying they're somehow better than everyone else and are looking down on all those other people. that makes them a lot more egoistic than everyone else in my opinion.

in any case, the commercial is plain stupid. i don't think it delivered any message that would be beneficial to VW (in terms of vehicles they sell). rather, they insulted thousands of drivers that own all the cars mentioned in the commercial..

I own a 325i, and think that the ad is great. Too many "German sedan" owners are into their cars for the ego.

But then I also own a Passat

I think that the commercial is kind of funny. Also, I think the "safe happens" commercials for the Jetta are very effective...good marketing on VW's part.

I actually found the commercial to be pretty funny. Even though I try not to make generalizations, there are many people who buy particular brands of cars for the image. This seems to be even more true for some brands of cars.

Of the German cars, VW has always been more of a "common" car, so the ad makes sense. A similar commercial could be used for cars like Hyundai or Suzuki (cars that aren't much of an ego booster).

I remember a few years ago, Audi had an ad showing two next door neighbors getting into thier cars in the morning. One got into an Audi, the other got into a BMW. Simultaneously, they both looked up and began to adjust the rear view mirror. However, the Audi driver then proceeded to back out of his driveway while the BMW driver was grooming himself in the rearview mirror. He then looks to his side and notices the Audi driver had already left!

At the end of the commercial they made a comment about Audi was the car for true drivers.

eerr dumb commercial, who's with the ego actually? obviously VW duh! VW's just tryin to make itself looks best by puttin down drivers with other cars thats it..so what if people buy other brands? VW comparing itself to viper, 300c, etc wtf? its the people's choice, if u've 100grand to spare would u buy a jetta or passat or gti? F*ck no! now i love the GTI ads but this one
