Tested my results twice this weekend - no hiccupping! Thanks for the suggestion, Galahad. I'll probably do this a few times a year now that I know it definitely has a positive effect.

You're welcome roundel. Heck, even I was doing it the other day...seems to agree well with my car too.

Our engines seem to dislike low-rpm soft driving, and will eventually make you pay if you take it too easy. Who knew?

Do you remember that movie with Walter Matthau and Elaine May called "A New Leaf"? In it, Walter Matthau's character started having financial troubles and in one scene, his Ferrari is being towed away to be repaired because of "carbon on the valves", and it wasn't the first time. I suspect all higher-performance engines are like this and periodically need to be "blown out" - at least, that's been my experience. Where are you able to drive it like we've discussed in your area? On the L.I.E.?

Exactly so--on the LIE. Also 4th @ 80 mph.
And I have to say, my engine feels definitely punchier now. It really rewarded me for doing this.

Went on a BMWCCA chapter tour today, about 250 miles round trip, both highway driving and some back-road stuff, plus a small amount of in-town with A/C on (very, very humid today). Averaged 26.4 MPG, which is about is 2 MPG better than the last similar trip with A/C off. Mileage has definitely improved.

Nice that we both have the kind of roads we need to be able to drive for half an hour at 80, isn't it? Although winter is probably a little rougher for you than me - our winter here lasts 6 weeks and usually means daytime temps are 45 degrees or lower.

Big thumbs up for your persistance in getting it solved

So this IS related to carbon build-up on valves. I see that your extended warranty denied coverage. Does anyone think I can get this covered by a CPO warranty?

If not, does anyone know of a good indy shop in the NY (Westchester/Putnam County) or CT (Fairfield County) shop that could be trusted to do a valve cleaning job? I don't want to go to the dealer unless it would be under warranty...

interesting... i also have this issue, but with a AT and just over 50k on the odo. I'll try to old school "oven cleaning" sometime this week and see what it does.

i do recall, however, it would be an interesting test as well, that i had my cars battery unplugged for about a day and upon plugging it back in, my issue had dissipated. however it's back again, and i'm not sure what that means. but i do think this issue is weather related, as it was quite cool when i wasn't having issues. now that it's heated up, i have the issue back again. so i don't know if it was the battery or the weather, but either way i'm going to try the "oven cleaning" and see how that goes.

I also had a variation of this problem and had the valves cleaned. Very expensive and did not fix my issues although the car definitely ran better after the cleaning. Dinan sent a covered transport truck to pick up my car last saturday so they could work on it. Last I heard yesterday they have fixed the durging i was having and have to replace 2 injectors, BMW replaced 4 of the 6 which left me with a misfire). The it should be on its way back and ready for its new wheels.

That doesn't mean you go 100 mph. You just put the engine under load, going highway speeds in a low gear--4k RPMs @ 60 mph, for example.

Make sure you don't overheat.

This tends to burn off any of the oily gunk in the combustion chamber and some of the stuff clinging to the back of your intake valves. Something like your oven's cleaning cycle.
WOW.... YOU DA MAN !!!

PROPS TO YOU !!!!

I did the 30 minute 3rd gear 4k run and the hesititation is all gone now !

who would have thought on a DI engine this would have done anything !

Thanks again !

just to be sure

I'm also having this problem!! I just got the car 3 weeks ago and recently it been having the same kinda problems. Its an auto and when I'm driving at a certain pace no problems but when i hit the gas it feels like its missfireing and stutters!! But today as i was driving, 10 min in it goes into limp mode. after a couple of minutes it goes away. Do you suggest the old school way first before i tell my SA?? I bought it with 30,000 on it with the CPO. Thanks for any feed back. And also I called to see if it was in need for recall and the rep said it was already done.

Only takes 20 minutes, so go ahead and give it a try. It could be something else altogether from what you are telling us, though - I don't think any of the rest of the posters here had any incidents with limp-mode. You may have a fuel pump/injector/plug coil starting to go out, but that's just speculation.

dont you have a 30 day warranty in addition to the cpo warranty...

if so might want to get that car in ASAP so you wont have to pay $50 or have any additional grief. Sounds like HPFP good luck !

I think we're onto something here. I did a 30 minute run at 4100 rpm in 3rd gear @ 60 mph today and 90% of my "pulsating" issue is gone and cured. There is still a little bit remaining but i think another run or so and frequently once a month or so repeating it will take care of this problem. YOU GO POTTY PANTS. I have been dealing with this since I put the Dinan S2 flash in last September. It was less in the winter and more pronounced and serious in the summer. Now while being very hot here 97F today the issue is almost completely gone. YEAH!!

I have to pay accolades to PottyPants here. he has kept me informed and kept in touch with me over the entire past year and updated me on developments. THANK YOU SIR

yw sir glad to help a brother out !

I would have figured those guys on the track with dinan s2 would have gotten rid of the pulsating but i guess the varying rpm doesnt work and it needs to be sustained resonably high rpm.

the pulsating was pissing me off soo much i was thinking about how to get rid of this car.

take care

I agree PP. I drive my car "ambitiously" so I carefully warm it up but then I lay into it and would have thought that would blow out the carbon. Obviously it needs sustained higher rpm operation to do that. I notcied that the oil temps are 10-20F higher when you run at this rpm level too.

Spark plugs and Valve clean up should help with this issue.

That costs a ton of monye and unfortunately does not help this issue in 90% of the cases.
