Had to pay a visit to the service department to get NYS Safety inspection on new E92. South Carolina won't inspect a car that's not registered in the state.

Anyway, I am resigned to change the oil after break-in and asked how much does an oil change cost at the dealer. $130 including tax. I immediately proceeded to the parts counter and asked for oil and filter for my car, 2007 E92 328i. I knew what I was supposed to get and was glad the counterman knew also! 7qts BMW Synthetic 5w-30 & filter: total w/tax came to $54.10.

One of the valets saw me carrying the case of oil and asked why I bought it. I told him I plan on changing oil myself after break-in. He proceeded to tell me that's not necessary, the oil is good for 25,000 miles but BMW recommends 15,000, they know what's best for your car. I told him thanks, but I know what's best for my car too! Now this is the kicker....he told me that any service done on the car other than by BMW may void the warrantee. I said that's OK and wished him a good day! I wonder if he works on commission..

Some points to keep in mind when changing your oil:

1-Don't leave the key fob in the slot. I'm not 100% on this, but I heard of someone who did this and oil went all over the place when he opened the filter housing. Seems that having the key fob in the slot wakes up the car and starts all kinds of things including oil pump....again not 100% on this, but why take a chance.

2-Don't open the filter housing until you have opened the drain plug. The pressure from the oil system will push oil out the top of the filter and it will make a mess. I have always opened the oil fill cap before draining oil to release any vacuum pressure.

Please feel free to comment/correct any of the above before I change my oil. I want a process that's as painless as I can make it! :rocks:

In regards to 1. Not true, I left my keyfob in the car the entire time so I could listen to some jazz while I work

In regards to 2. You may be right, that does make sense. I'm glad I held off on opening up the filter cap until the oil was drained.

~My own observations:

1) All 7 qts are necessary if you drain the oil after having the car run for 10 minutes.
2) When turning the knob for the door to swing open, if it doesn't want to turn completely...try turning it the other way(learned)
3) The car runs about 10-15 degrees cooler since I changed it (since yesterday)
4) Don't listen to parts, make sure you know what you need prior to arrival. Parts department tried to tell me I needed Synthetic 0-40 motor oil if I was going to use Castrol (had asked for Castrol, but Castrol Synthic is the same as BMW Synthetic). 0-40 is for Mobil1 Synthic only I believe.
5) Changing the oil is so easy on this car, I'm not claiming to be mechanically inclined...quite the opposite but it was a breeze (although it took about 1 and 1/2hrs to figure it all out).

Adding to this knowledge bank, there are some pics below:

Starting Material

Proper Blend

New vs Old

Old vs New

Small area to plug a pen into

Small Green Seal removal

Lubricated Nicely

Fully Drained

Cool Runnings

You should always do this

By leaving that filter housing on you can have up to 2qts of oil left in the engine

This really doesnt matter either way you do it, but I usually break the oil filter loose first and pull it up alittle and prop it up by sticking a screwdriver or something on the side of to hold the oil filter suspended inside its housing. When you drain the oil, this allows the oil sitting in the oil filter housing to go back into the pan and come out.

Can we get the sequence of opening drain plug, oil filter cap, oil fill cap?

I was under the impression if you open the oil fill cap before you open anything else, oil will flow out the top from internal pressure.

Can one of you guys set this straight?

ok this is how i do it

open oil cap

loosen up the filter

lift car on lift ( of course i'm at work)

drain oil

put new crush washer and plug drain hole back up

lower car

you can either fill the engine back up with oil then install filter or you can put the filter in first then fill engine with oil

when changing filter you should change the small o-ring at the end (they can break if you over tighten the oil filter. they will cause a major oil leak) and put on the bigger o-ring around the filter housing

start engine and check oil level

misc stuff i do :

top off washer fluid
top off coolant
set tire pressures to spec

So I gather that as long as you open the oil fill cap first, it releases any internal pressure which would cause a mess when you open the oil filter cap...

Thanks for clearing this up...last thing I want to do is get dirty (for that matter, clean) oil all over my engine compartment!

Open the oil fill cap, then turn the oil filter cap slowly till you just hear it starting to suck in some air.

You can then hear the oil draining out from the filter housing into the oil pan

After a couple seconds it stops, and you can then completely unscrew the filter and remove it

I then undo the drain bolt and clean up the filter housing

I then replace the filter and wait for the oil to stop draining out the bottom.

The BMW instructions to the dealers is to open up the filter first, before lifting the car and opening the drain plug.

Thanks! Now I'm assured of a drip free oil change!

Does it really void the warranty to do your own oil change?????

I think they tell you that to coerce you into paying the dealership for routine maintainence that you can do yourself.

This is a great thread. All the info is very much appreciated. I'm planning on doing my first post break-in oil change this weekend and this thread will help me make sure I don't F it up.

I buy oil from BMW and it is like $4.60 a quartz (give or take a few cents). If you go out to wal-mart and try to buy synthetic oil, price is almost the same so for me I rather get it from the dealer just to make sure since I plan to keep the car way after the free maintenance period.
WOW!!!! dude seriously we get ass raped here in NY!!! I asked my wife to stop at my dealership's parts dept today because I did not have the time to pick up the oil and filter..so i called ahead and told them what I wanted so they would have it all ready for her...So she went picked it up and called me when she got in her car...adn said I think I got everything you need...but it was really expensive...how much? $78.00

So I figured whatever...I will look at the invoice when I get home...7 Quarts of oil (which is what he should have sold me for one oil change) at $8.10 per quart...it is the same oil as the OP. and the oil filter was $15.8

Does anyone know if this price is current and inline for all BMW dealers on Long Island? I am not going to return it, and try and find it cheaper this round but I would like to know for future reference.

Has anyone used this valve on a E92 Coupe? I had one on a Honda Odyssey and it made oil changes much easier. I could attach a hose to the nipple on the valve and put the other hose end in the oil container. No mess. No fuss. While waiting for the oil to drain I would inspect the engine bay and exterior.

No. Anyone can perform the maintenance on the vehicle. I always keep the receipts for everything I do, just in case there is any question about what products were used.

I just changed my oil/filter for the first time @ 1837 and would like to dump a huge heap of praise on everyone who contributed to this thread.

Everything went swimmingly until I attempted to screw back on the filter top. When removing it, I noticed the final position of the green mark and counted the # of turns until it came free. Put on the O-rings, lubricated them and pre-oiled the filter. Now came the fun part!

The green marks would not line up! ...and it seemed that the o-ring was oozing out from the top. I'm not one just to let things stay the way they are if I'm not 100% positive that it's the way it should be. Thankfully, this OCD trait that I have, probably saved my butt.

I came back inside and looked at this thread again and noticed that I positioned the large o-ring at the top of the filter cap instead of seating it in it's proper place, which caused the issue of not being able to align the green marks and causing the o-ring to ooze out. I removed the filter cap and since I was not comfortable using the new o-ring that I might have compromised, I replaced it with the original one (I figure that it should still be good since it has only been in service just a short time) and set it properly this time. The filter cap then went on without a hitch.

Filled all 7 qts, checked for any drips, started the engine and re-checked for drips. Not a drop! Let it warm up and checked the oil level sensor....everything A-OK!

Thanks again to this great forum! :rocks:
