Latest Mod - Tri Color M Steering Wheel with paddles installed
I haven't seen anyone else post up about doing this yet, so I thought I would try it myself. The Tri-color M steering wheel isn't available with cutouts like the M sport wheel for the paddles as the M3 doesn't come with paddles (at least not until the SMG goes in this year and they use different paddles).
Thought I would give it a try doing it myself! It's really really hard and has a good possibility of ruining a nice $300 wheel (got it off ebay from that guy in Europe that sells them - good service price and quick shipping it you want one). I basically measured and drilled and hacked some holes into the wheel for the paddles - its all just rubber, so an exacto knife works well and the aluminum for support is in the same places on both wheels. Big difference is the contour on the back of the wheel is different, it is a little thinner where as the original wheel they thicken up the rubber to come out around the paddles. Once I got the paddles in, it didn't look so good on the back as they stuck out and didn't fit the contour like I had hoped - fix ended up being urethan sealant (stuff that holds your windshield in) looks nice, bonds well to rubber and fills in the gap to look almost factory. One more thing I found on the back of the wheel on the edge of the rubber that makes the circle around the mount hole, there is a half cirlce small cutout in the edge and a pin the is in the column that pops up into this whole - not sure if it is a wheel lock or transmission interlock, but either way - the M3 wheel has it on the opposite side, so I had to cut on out myself - you will see I have to notches around the perimiter one on each side. Anyway - works mint and looks pretty good and I love the wheel - not an easy mode, but can be done and I think the outcome is sweet!!) Oh and before anyone asks - the wheel is on right, it is just turned a bit where it is parked, but is straigh when driving! Rob |

Looks amazing! Great job. Unfortunately, a bit too involved for my DIY capability.

Great mod Rob! I was wondering if this could be done since the "M" steering wheel with paddels is nearly twice as much.
Could you post a close-up pic of the rear of the M wheel where you cut out for the paddles, and maybe go into a little more detail? I may have to do this and thanks for sharing! -Rick

+1 I'm sure somebody's got enough free time to figure out how to retrofit the paddles... give it time, I'm sure someone will do it.
