This morning when I started my car, it struggled to start up. Its been happening on and off for about a month now. But today was the worst, it struggled to start up then had dark exhaust fumes come out of my exhaust and the car sounded like it was going to die. The check engine came on and the car struggled to stay on.

My car is a 2008 E92 335 with 21k miles

Sounds like it especially if the SES came on. Dealer time! Check OBDII just to see what it says anyway.

My car has been doing the SAME THING. 09 335 with 4500. Took it to the dealer this morning...they are very familiar with it. She told me to switch to mid-grade because the high levels of ethanol in high test has some kind of effect on the pistons. This seems to jive with stuff I've been reading on e90 and other forums.

Really? That sounds like a load of bull to me. Effect on the pistons? What does the grade of gas have to do with pistons?

Ive never heard of using lower octane to help with the ethanol? SA's never know what they are talking about.

We just got rid of our '08 535(Lemon Law buy-back) because of 5 or 6 fuel pump failures(along with the complete injection and turbo), and the first sympton of the HPFP going out was hard starting, then a rough idle. The one time the injectors went out(apparently all of 'em), it did the same thing.
I'm on this forum because now the wife wants a 335 coupe. She thinks the '09's have been 'fixed', while I'm just gearing up for another ride.
I want her to get the 335D. I drove one, and that sumbitch could tow a house.

At least if she gets the coup, I was able talk her into the M package(I want the paddle shifters...she won't take a M/T).
I tried to talk her into the new S4, but that didn't go over well.

I wouldn't go for another N54 powered car until BMW gives me a guarantee (in writing) that the HPFP issue is fixed.

Anyone know that if the SES lamp doesn't light, are there still codes stored? In my case, the motor just plain shut off while driving, yet after restarting, everything except stability was normal. But it happened twice.

I'm hoping that I don't take my car in, only to be told to start using lower octane fuel and that will stop the vehicle from shutting off while driving in traffic.

Yes...the codes are stored.

Most codes are stored forever. However misfire codes will disappear after a few hundred miles. hpfp or other serious codes will always be there.

rofl. that is funny. i never heard of anything that could be solved by lower your fuel grade .. btw what does it have to do with the pistons.. that is just bs to me.
