I picked up my 2008 coupe this morning, they replaced the fuel pump and 2 injectors the service guy assured me that this was a brand new pump they put in and not a remanufactured one.
I'm not sure if it's my imagination but it seems that the exhaust note has changed and it's also a little louder (not a bad thing). This is my second pump, I have around 12,700 on the car. It also seem much more responsive, the lag has definately gone.

Had mine is for 3 recalls last week...no letter just calls from my dealer.

-New software (emmissions?)
-6 injectors inspected; 3 replaced
-NO NEW HPFP!

Car still has intermittent long cranks but not throwing any codes.

I did notice two things...
1. The exhaust note seems louder
2. My Idrive Service requirements screen has a new category "State inspection" which I believe had to do with N54 equipped cars failing emissions which mine is now due for.

By the way...she still runs great on the original HPFP and I have had zero real issues with this car.

Just joined the not so exclusive club. Received the letter took the car in, had no issues before. The SA gave me the company line "emissions" I told the fool that I've been following this since joining this informative group. Just silence! At the end of the 1st day the SA called and said they were waiting on software (lol). When i picked up the car on the 2nd afternoon:

1) Program Control Units (including CAS)
2) Remove scan and refit/replace injectors - 4 replaced, 6 decoupling units replaced, 3 gasket rings replaced.
3) Replace HPFP - defect code 00.13.97.01.00 PN 446
4) Clear fault memory (none showing before)
5) Checked LP sensor and replaced HDP pump - no part number
6) Annual low milage oil change

I too seem to think the exhaust note got louder???

I hope like all of you, they just didn't "fix" a car that ran great.

Got mine back today and I dodged a bullet. I still had the original software so they ran the update and did not do anything else. I'm one of the lucky ones that have had no problems (16,000 miles) so I was real glad they didn't try and replace anything. It does seem a little louder to me but maybe I'm saying that because I read it in about three straight posts. I really can't tell any difference. I need to put my SS Turbo Tuner back on tonight because I can really tell a difference when it is not hooked up. Did get a windsheild washer issue fixed, it wouldn't squirt much liquid before and they cleaned the firm off the screen in the tank and it works great now.

I'm curious if there are any post recall HPFP failures? I have not seen any HPFP failure threads in quite some time

I'm sure after all this they had several very competent people working on this. I don't think bmw would or ever directly design a pump, but would outsource this stuff to the likenesses of bosch.

The official recall was just done to soothe the uproar from the ABC News coverage?

Putting reman parts back into circulation seems unprofessional and certainly does not match the image of the BMW badge!
I got my car back and the part is nothing like those mentioned in this thread.

HPFP part #: 13-51-7-616-170
Pump : 135019

I also saw in the note that says:
  1. Programming crashed on 1st attempt
  2. Most Bus crashed
  3. Performed battery reset
  4. Re-programmed successful

Looks like the battery reset wiped all of my presets.

Not sure about that but what is interesting is how many owners have the cars back and say they run very similar to before, maybe louder or quieter, but now do not get lights or codes. Same pumps as they were putting in before, so the hardware is basically the same yet no codes or lights. Could the software have changed the point at which the codes or the lights came on before and possibly raised that tolerance level to a higher level. That would keep a lot of lights and codes out of the service departments and make a very good visual impression. Maybe what used to throw a code iis now considered normal due to the software and it takes more of a problem to get a code or light. If you cant win the game then change the rules.
Sounds like paranoid nonsense until you think about what happened with 29.2 and how that may have been the first attempt to deal with the fuel pump problem.
There was a second S/A on the grassy knoll.

I'm not saying that was their solution in its entirety, but over the course of the past 3 years and several pumps, I can guarantee you that there were SW updates in there that raised the threshold. The first couple threw codes very quickly and the last failure (Nov '10) had me going through 30 seconds of idle varying from 2.4k down to 400 and almost stalling and back up to 2.4k, back down to 400 almost stalling, etc.... It was the most embarrassing and ridiculous proof that the car was broken that I've ever seen.

Yet when I took it into the dealer, they said they could not do anything about it because there were no codes. That's not their fault; I don't expect them to work on the car if they're not getting reimbursed by BMW, but c'mon.... This went on for a month until finally one day it successfully went into limp mode. At that point, I drove straight to the dealer and they took care of it. The software threshold has definitely been changed. I have no doubt.

I specifically asked the SA if the pumps were reman and she made a call to the workshop. Mechanics told they are new and not reman.

Whatever it is, I hope this thing will go for 100k or so ..

For the records, mine used to backfire easily when the engine is cold and when I shift it to gear #1 or #2 and let go the accelerator. This does not happen anymore.
Also, based on this wiki article, it seems like one of the major causes of backfiring is due to insufficient fuel pressure; thus, causing a super lean fuel/air mixture.

My wife just picked mine up. New HPFP, 2 new injectors, but no new software? Does that make sense?

Nothing in this entire process makes sense. You may have received the software another time you took the car in and not even realized it. They tried to put new software on mine well over a year ago and I said no thanks.

same thought also crossed my mind. During a routine scan on my car this Monday nite at my local tuning shop, we were surprised to see that the computer screen turned up a flag under the engine section: it was fuel pump related failure warning (i forgot the exact word on the monitor), but the car has never threw a check engine light. i did receive the newest software 3 months ago so that the pump primes when waking from sleep mode, but on several occasions lately I've felt the car ran very sluggish and start up cranks are getting longer again, all the while with no yellow engine light on the dash.
If we didn't scan the car, I'd never knew the car already threw codes on the fuel pump...

had my HPFP replaced today, and received pump with the same part #. I asked why it wasn't the 446 ones, the SA just said that it's whatever is available at this moment. my service record also said 4 injectors failed testing and were replaced.

i actually scheduled the appointment originally for some other small annoyance unrelated to HPFP. But the first thing my SA asked me after I got out of my car was: are you here for the recall?

Here're the good stuffs I am experiencing after I got back from the recall:
  1. no more backfire when I lift my foot off the accelerator at gear #1 going down a slope in cold engine
  2. crank time dropped from 3-4 turns to 1-2 turns of the engine
  3. user interface for answering incoming phone calls has changed for the better

And, the bad stuffs:
  1. fuel consumption seemed to be higher
  2. idle speed is also higher

Are you guys seeing these as well?

^^^
I didn't notice any change in idling after having the recall done on mine.
The only things they did on mine was replace the pump and reprogram the engine control unit. No injectors were replaced.
It does, however, seem like the MPG average has improved a little.
