I too am wondering about this. My K&N arrives tomorrow. I am impatiently waiting to install it. What is the advantage/disadvantage of the charcoal filter?

Thanks

you remove the charcoal and replace the air filter with the k&n. The advantage, better airflow(not as much restriction, 1 filter vs. 2). The disadvantage, something about the gasses escaping from the intake when you turn the car off(unsure about this)

It's kinda strange that the charcoal filter is not replacable. 10 years from now, people will be riding around with the same charcoal filter from the factory! That's definitely going to lower the performance/efficiency of the car down the road.

If I upgraded to the Euro Airbox, would I need to still do this?

Just did this, and it's a great mod for a 328i. There was some white smoke from the tailpipe on initial start, but never repeated again.

Noticeable increase during lower RPM. Which is great for city DDs.

Is the charcoal filter the same thing as the "microfilter?"

^ Nope 2 different things. Charcoal filter is located by the air filter. Microfilter is located by your windshield wipers.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Ever seen a DIY for the Microfilter posted anywhere? I searched and couldn't find anything.

I had removed my charcoal filter a while back also. I would recommend you remove the entire air box to do this so the charcoal particles dont fall down into the intake hose. Easy to do and does give a noticable gain in response to the throttle.

This is an excellent must do! My girl is quicker on her feet and smoother on the Accel... The sluggishness at that 3 and 4 gear is gone! Nice write up!

hey guys,
I's going to do this on my E92 328 when it gets a little warmer! I'm at work right now and dont have time to read the 8 pages in this thread so apologys in advance if this has already been asked/answered, but i see that you did this on an E90, my airbox is very similar but do you think there may be any differences for my E92? Its simple enough that i'll find out anyway when i do it, just wondering. Thanks!

My average MPG was 24.9. No complaints. Right after the carbon filter removal, it went to 25.1. Runs better too.

So true. There's no reason in the would not to get rid of the thing. If I can do it, anyone can.

If i wanted to just replace the filter with a K&N would i have to take the whole airbox out, would it make it easier to install?

Take the box all the way out. It's not hard. Undue the wire in the back, loosen the hose clamp, undue the two 10mm bolts, take the front plenum off, and tilt the thing out. Clean it inside and out before re-installing it with a new or cleaned filter. Get rid of the carbon filter too. If you have one.
