Looking for a good point and shoot

Hey guys I'm not really looking become a pro photographer, I will be mostly using thia to take pictures of cars I detail. I want something that has good picture quality and perhaps some minor adjustability for when I decide to put more time into learning about the settings and taking better pictures. I'm not really concerened about the size of the camera, just looking for the best quality for about $150-300. Thanks.

Heres one I found:

Here's the P&S camera that I've been looking at. The price has been dropping steadily (it was about $306 about a month ago). Now it's $269.99 with a free 2GB Sandisk card.

Check out this thread. I have some sample pics from my SD870IS in there. The shots aren't that great, but I also had only had the camera for a few days at that point.

I'm happy with it.

If it comes with a free 2gig sd card that's awesome. I just bought a 4gig SDHC card for $30.

if you want a versatile camera for that price range i would get one with image stabilization.

I've always been partial to Canon P&S for their size and color interpretation. Their IS line is great.

Leica lenses on the panasonics are good too - but i own a powershot P&S and a Nikon DSLR.

I would stick with Nikon or Canon. They are built superior (in my opinion) and both companies offer support (spare parts, etc) longer than any other competitor.

Also, with Mother's Day coming up there should be sales at every major chain. Let us know what you decide.

I went and checked some out today. I think it's either between the nikon s600 or the canon sd870is...my parents have an sd750 and pic quality is ok, however I think that's because it's been dropped, might be scratched a bit, etc.

Kodak disposable. $9.99, or $14.99 with flash, works great for shooting in the car, and no one will ever steal it.

Canon G9. This topic has been discussed quite a bit and if you search, you will find a few posts about the features that different point and shoots offer.

The g9 is kind of expensive, 425 seems to be the lowest price I could find on it. If I was going to spend that kind of money wouldnt it be worth it to go for the rebel xti?

You can always look at its older brother the canon G7. Im sure you can find it used for much cheaper.

Personally, i think its still better to have a point and shoot and a DSLR. DSLR's are pretty big and you do not want to chug it around with you every single place you go. Plus DSLR's cannot shoot video. With the Canon G series, you get all the benefits of a DSLR (shooting in RAW, ability to change lenses, flashes) in a small compact point and shoot form AND you can still shoot video.

I like the Canons. The SD1000 was on sale at Toys R Us for $120 and people were still finding them up until about friday, they might still be out there. I had one and they are tiny and very good for just a point and shoot. The G7 is a good camera but that's in between an SLR and P&S. Much larger than your typical P&S and more expensive.

To find a deal on one, just make sure you check slickdeals.net hotdeals forum before you buy to make sure you're getting the best deal.

i agree - if you're really after convenience and just clicking away - a smaller point and shoot is ideal. if you want higher quality go for an entry level dslr.

the sd1000 is a great little camera.. G7/G9 is good too, but too big for a p&s IMHO.. you cant stick that in your pocket and take it everywhere.. the 8xxIS line from canon is also a good camera..

nikon coolpix is good too.. but they're slightly bigger. go to dpreview.com and read about a few of these suggestions.

One thing I really like about small point and shoots is that since I've owned them, I've captured more moments in my life and travels than I ever would have lugging around a larger camera. Because it can fit in your pocket, you will take it with you more and take more pictures whenever you have the chance. So when you consider a point and shoot, the size should play a big part in your decision. I can live with the shots that they're capable of taking more than 99% of the time. Once in a while, I see these guys posting up some really crisp pictures that only an SLR can produce and I gawk at those photos and the mastery they have with photo editing. But my little Canon SD800IS and the SD1000 has served me so well in their ability to capture the moment as it came along without having to stage anything.

There was a deal on a rebel xti for 320 plus shipping for the body only about 3 weeks ago...I think I'll just hold out until I can get a good deal on either an xti or a G9.

Well today I bought a A590is to try out and it's ok, but I think I'm just going to return it and hold out until I get a good deal on a DSLR.

I didn't even realize how many different settings this camera has, this is way above the sd750 I had. I got a coupon for 30 off and got the a590is from staples for 160 after tax and with free shipping. If I come across a good deal I'll also get an SLR, with the xsi coming out I'm sure the xti will be coming down in price. Thank's for everyones input.
