Question Recommend Point & Shoot

Okay, I've gone back through old posts to look at recommended cameras but nothing that is really specific to what I'm looking for. I'd like suggestions for a digi camera, that provides some degree of manual setting options, but also provides I nice crisp photos on the "factory" point and shoot settings.

I currently have a 4 year old Kodak that does offer manual settings, but it's just become too bulky to carry around. Although I will continue to use it for videos, it's the best sound/video combo I've found.

Preferrably something under $300 if possible. I'm interested in getting to learn how to use manual settings and purchase a dslr down the road. Right now I'm just looking for a camera that can provide nice photos and I can carry on me without it being a pain is a$$.

I've started checking out dpreview as I did 4 years ago with my last camera, it's just very time consuming.

My uncle who knows a good amount about photography told me to go with Cannon. Any input is great appreciated. Thank you.

I looked at a lot of digital cameras before picking the one recommended by PC World mag, the Fuji finepix f50 fd. Very advanced features for foolproof pics including two stabilizer functions. 12.1 megapixels. I scouted the internet and got mine for $230 delivered from B&H photo. Includes a carrying case but it is very small and fits in my pocket.
Couldn't be happier!

I don't use them, so it's hard to recommend one. To me they're all the same, and none are really worth the money. The PS is ok just to throw in your coat for snapping pics, but if you want to learn how to use a camera via a PS, you're getting bad advice. If you want to learn how to use a camera, get a DSLR, like the D40x or XTi, and learn that way. Don't waste the $$$ on a PS.

Check www.kenrockwell.com. He has a few he uses and likes.

I have used several of them and the one I would highly recommend is ANY Canon ELPH. I have had 2 different ones now and they just take amazing pictures all around.

edit: I agree with not messing with the p&s if you want to do manual settings. The best p&s camera with good manual settings I have seen is actually from Olympus.

I would go straight to a Canon XT or Nikon D40 (pretty much just preference between these two DSLRs)

I was looking at a P&S camera too and I've narrowed it down to two- Canon SD870 and Canon SD950.

SD950-

SD870-
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....1860079 92197

Based on the reviews I've read, the SD870 is the best bang for the buck. The SD950 is a bit clearer and has a titanium body. Either way you cant really go wrong with either one.

Note: I'm only using Bestbuy's links because they have both on their site. Circuit City has the SD870 for $300 or so (as does Newegg.com). For the SD950 I think Fry's might have a better deal than Best Buy.

I've tried a lot of different P&S cameras and some are hit and miss but what i've noticed is you cant go wrong with any of the Canon Powershot line. Dependent on your price range and what you want to do with the photos you can choose which SDxxx you want.

Thanks a lot guys for all the opinions. I understand why getting a P&S with manual settings is sort of a lost cause. The only reason I wanted it, is so I can carry it on me at all times without it being too much of a nusaunce.

I'm going snowboarding in March and wanted a new camera I could have in my jacket taking up minimal space. The one thing I will continue to use my old Kodak for is the movie mode. It's still the best overall quality out of all DC's I've seen since 2003.

Thanks for the offer ATG, not that I don't trust the camera is in awesome condition, I prefer to buy electronics new in the box.

Again, thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. Hopefully I will get a DSLR in the near future.

I just went back through the P&S camera research thing, and I landed with my second Powershot.

Great cameras, durable, awesome pics, and very easy to use.'

I have a Canon Digital Elph SD550 7.1 megapixel.
Easy to use and the clarity is outstanding. Camera couldn't be easier to use either.

I was just looking at those, and may go that way if I don't decide to step up to the XTI Rebel. Still debating and need to find the time to check them out and get a feel for them.

Thanks again, got more response than I expected and it's greatly appreciated.

Canon G9 rocks. Or if you want smaller, go for PS 870.
