new DLSR for amateurish photgrapher

I need some advice for getting my first DSLR. I've shot with a canon rebel 35mm a while back and I took photography class in the past with B&W, which I know is a different world from color and digital but I really want to get back into taking pics. So I've narrowed down my selections to a Nikon D80 or Canon D80.
I have a bunch of questions and wouldn't mind some guidance from the boards and photo pro's here.

1) Is canon's camera better than Nikons? (its 12.2mp vs.10.2 and CMOS vs. CCD)

2) What lenses should I get? And does Nikon or Canon make better ones or should I be buying 3rd party? (I want to shoot landscape, cars, and random stuff, so I'm thinking standard lens and a telephoto of up to 200mm)

3) Manualwise, does the canon or Nikon have better features?

4) I eventually want to move up to a pro camera like the Nikon d300, which looks fabulous, but I don't have 2k to drop on a freakin' camera...but I want a good foundation in order to fully utilize all its bells and whistles.

TIA from anyone =D

i think canon is more user friendly than nikon...i've seen a lot of people with it than nikon (probably because it's cheaper) but i personally like the nikon and i have d200 atm.

i'd stick to non 3rd party just because i like it that way...haha

i've yet try other cameras but i started with d200 and i've already poured 3g+ on to camera without lenses ^^ it all depends on how much $ you are will to put down.
i will eventually move onto d300 or +

If you are set on the Nikon d300 then start with the Nikon so you can keep the same lenses. Otherwise I like Canon myself but it does seem to be more about personality and personal choice.

i have the d80, and I love it. It's a great beginning dSLR. as far as lenses, I bought a Nikon 18-200 VR lens, after having a 18-55 and a 55-200. The 18-200 lens is a bit more (probably 500-600 more than the two lenses combined), but it works great.

1. 10.2 vs 12 mp is insignificant.
2. Both make great lenses.
3. Depends on the camera.
4. If you think you want a Nikon later, get one now. You can re-use the lenses.

My advice, repeated many times in this forum, is go play with them both. Whatever feels more comfortable is the right camera for you. Canon or Nikon, they're both excellent, one really isn't any better than the other. I shoot Nikon and I have my reasons, but they're my reasons, and may or may not apply to you. Check them out, see what you like. You can't go wrong with Canon or Nikon.

There are a lot of really good threads on this topic (one camera vs. another)

Here are a bunch of replies I've posted, maybe they'll help...

Whoa, thanks Turbofan and everyone else! I think its the classic BMW vs. Mercedes thing again with cameras. I've been looking at the new Canon XSI and I want to play with that when it comes out, it looks like a spectacular camera. Also I think I'm going to keep the cost toned down...I don't have the money to spend on 2k of camera and accessories... =D

all mid and top end cameras nowadays are about the same. You won't notice much difference unless you are going pro. Use whatever is easier for you to use. Both Nikon and Canon makes great cameras. Lenses are not cheap so try to stick w/ same brand so you can reuse the lenses when you buy new cameras later on. Take pictures in RAW format and make adjustments w/ softwares like nikon capture PS and etc.. If you don't have the budget to buy D300 try D200. It's a great camera. Nikon makes great lenses 50.4 85.4 70-200vr 105vr and so on.....

Maybe a used Nikon D200

You can get a used D200 for around $800 to $900

Here are photos from my old Nikon D200, most of them are 100% crop.
