Bootlid gets stuck open halfway - is that normal?

Hi guys, for some reason, I've noticed that when I open my bootlid on my e92 it doesn't spring open. I have to open it up by hand. I don't remember how it was when new and if this is normal or not. Can anyone advise?

Thanks

I have an e90 not a 92 but that opens smoothly all the way, although I wish BMW had given it struts or springs so it would pop open when unlocked

Yes, I agree like the 5 series.

I remember reading (not here) that somebody was going to try the 5 series struts, but I never followed up to see if the size/fixings matched.

Yeah same. Its coming off manufacterers warranty end of the year. Debating whether to take it in before then as not sure if it will be covered in the renewal warranty.

Will be good to get the opinion of another E92 owner.

I've only owned mine since July so do not know whether it's supposed to spring open.

That would be great Mistryn.

Dragon88 - I would have thought that they should spring open. Instead I have to give it a helping hand, just like yours. I did put a bit of grease on the gas struts, but it didn't do anything. I am wondering whether they are just there to hold the bootlid open, when open at full height - rather than fully springing open like a typical hatchback bootlid.

Sorry, I should have said. The struts on my E92 do nothing to lift my boot lid, they purely seem to be there to keep the lid open (when fully extended).

I checked mine today, if I press the boot release on the key fod, the boot will pop open but I have to lift it up halfway and then if I let go it fully opens by the gas struts - But I have to pull it open halfway

Yep me too - another shite design.

Although the E60 bootlid almost knocked me out when my dad pressed the open button whilst I was cleaning it, so maybe it's a safety feature

The new F30 does this. Just press the boot button on the fob and the boot pops up by itself.

Yeah i had a f30 as a loan car and it does this. Was quite cool. I noticed though that it didnt have gas struts (might be an electric motor inside), so it wouldnt really be possible to retrofit on our cars
